Happy Labor Day from the Saint Joseph County Fire Territory!

This Labor Day, we recognize the hardworking men and women who keep our communities moving every single day — from first responders and healthcare workers to tradespeople, educators, farmers, business owners, and everyone in between.

While many are enjoying a well-earned long weekend, our firefighters and paramedics remain on duty and ready to answer the call, 24/7.

As you enjoy the holiday, remember to celebrate safely. Drive sober, use extra caution around grills and campfires, stay hydrated, and keep an eye out for increased traffic on the roads.

From all of us at the Saint Joseph County Fire Territory, have a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable Labor Day!

Stay safe. Enjoy the day. We’ll be here if you need us. 🚒🇺🇸

⏱️ Every second counts.

In our line of work, one second can matter. One second sooner getting out the door. One second faster recognizing a problem. One second can make the difference when someone is waiting for help.

That’s why firefighters take seconds pretty seriously.

Apparently, so does the University of Michigan.

Turns out sometimes one second really CAN change everything.

From the fireground to the football field, the lesson is simple: never underestimate the importance of one second.

Enjoy the football weekend, stay safe, and remember — when seconds count, we’ll be there.

GO IRISH! 🍀

⚡🤘 WHO’S READY TO ROCK?! 🤘⚡

AC/DC takes over Notre Dame tonight, and we know plenty of people are getting ready for one heck of a night!

Before you get Thunderstruck, the Saint Joseph County Fire Territory has a few reminders to help everyone have a safe night:

It’s a Long Way to the Top — especially when you’re dealing with the heat! Hydrate early, drink plenty of water throughout the day, and take breaks if you’re feeling overheated.

Highway to Hell? Let’s not make it one. Expect heavier traffic around Notre Dame and throughout the South Bend area. Slow down, stay alert, watch for pedestrians, and give yourself extra time.

Have a Drink on Me… but not if you’re driving. Have fun, but plan ahead. Use a designated driver or another safe way home.

And if the heat has you feeling Shot Down in Flames — dizziness, confusion, nausea, weakness, or feeling faint are signs it’s time to get somewhere cool and get help.

Have fun, look out for each other, and make tonight memorable for all the RIGHT reasons!

From all of us at the Saint Joseph County Fire Territory — stay safe, stay hydrated, and ROCK ON! ⚡🎸🤘

🔥 Building Skills. Building Confidence. Building a Stronger Fire Territory.

Several members of the Saint Joseph County Fire Territory are currently working their way through Pump Operations / Driver Operator certification training.

Over the next several weeks, members will continue developing the skills required to safely operate our fire apparatus, position equipment, calculate fireground hydraulics, and efficiently supply water during emergency operations.

At the completion of the course, members will take the state certification exam, adding another valuable certification to their training and expanding the capabilities they bring to our department and community.

Training never stops in the fire service. Every new certification means more knowledge, more versatility, and a better-prepared firefighter when the tones drop.

We’re proud of our members for continuing to put in the time and work to become better at what they do. Keep up the great work, and good luck with the rest of the class and the state test!

BACK TO SCHOOL — SLOW DOWN & STAY ALERT!

It’s that time of year again! Students across our area are heading back to school, which means school buses are back on the roads and kids will be walking, biking, and waiting at bus stops.

The Saint Joseph County Fire Territory reminds everyone to give yourself a little extra time during your morning and afternoon commute.

Stop for school buses when required.
Watch carefully for children near bus stops and crosswalks.
Put the phone down and keep your attention on the road.
Slow down in school zones and residential areas.
Expect the unexpected — kids don’t always see you coming.

A few extra seconds of patience behind a school bus is nothing compared to the importance of getting every child to school and back home safely.

To all of our students, teachers, bus drivers, school staff, and parents — have a safe and successful school year!

Slow down. Stay alert. Keep our kids safe.

As the sun begins to go down this evening, please use extra caution while traveling throughout the area.

There are still several trees and large limbs down, along with damaged utility poles and downed power lines in multiple locations.

Please slow down, stay alert, and never approach or drive over a downed power line. Give utility crews and emergency responders plenty of room to work safely.

Stay safe tonight!

There is a significant storm front headed towards our area. PLEASE be weather aware for the next few hours.

We are going to be running a series where we give you a behind the scenes look at the board and the voices who have helped make the SJCFT a success. Here is our first spotlight!

Meet Wendy Yuhasz

Wendy Yuhasz is a long-standing citizen of Warren Township and has served on the Warren Township Advisory Board since 2018. As a member of the Township Advisory Board, Wendy attended all meetings concerning the creation of the St. Joseph County Fire Territory and served on the Fire Territory Board from its inception. While she currently does not hold a seat on the Fire Territory Board, she continues to attend the monthly meetings when she can.

Wendy currently represents Warren Township on the Advisory Board and is running to maintain her position on the Township Board this election cycle.

From 1986 until 2002, Wendy worked as a Senior Commercial Lines Property and General Liability Rater for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in Mishawaka.

In June 2003, she received her certificate and state license as a Certified Massage Therapist. She worked as a massage therapist at Honeywell’s Wellness Warehouse and American Health Muscular Therapy Clinic until retiring in 2017.

Wendy has also been a proud member of Lions International and the Lydick Lions Club for 20 years and is beginning her 10th year as Club President. The Lydick Lions Club has served the community since receiving its charter in 1958. The club provides monetary and other assistance to citizens of Warren Township as well as other nonprofit organizations throughout the community. They also provide eye screenings for children ages 18 months to 6 years throughout South Bend, Mishawaka, and Granger.

In the 1990s, Wendy attended the South Bend Civilian Police Academy. From there, she joined the Civilian Volunteer Officer group and worked alongside the South Bend Police Department, assisting with crowd and traffic control for high school and Notre Dame football games, as well as various fundraising walks throughout the city.

Wendy is proud of the St. Joseph County Fire Territory and the men and women who serve our community.

“I am proud of our Fire Territory because the staff is well trained, friendly, and goes above and beyond when called into action. Our firefighters continually work on training techniques during their shifts, always striving to become better at their jobs. The staff is professional and upholds their commitment to the community.

We are now equipped with an ambulance and well-trained paramedics and first responders. They enjoy interacting with people throughout the Territory, whether it is helping someone in need or cooling off the youngsters in the community with a water tanker and fire hoses!

I am very proud of my service time on the Fire Board. Having a son who is a firefighter for the City of South Bend, I know firsthand the dangers involved in performing their jobs. It is paramount that our firefighters have first-rate, state-of-the-art accommodations that help prevent health issues associated with performing their duties as firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs.

The St. Joseph County Fire Territory is well run and does not cut corners when it comes to the situations at hand. I have complete trust in their knowledge and level of training.”

From all of us at SJCFT, Thank you for everything you do to support us!
