The Day of Unity Breakfast is about solidarity. The conference is about understanding. And both are for all of us.
Domestic violence impacts every part of a community. It shows up in our homes, workplaces, schools, churches, healthcare systems, courtrooms, neighborhoods, and social circles. That means this conversation cannot belong only to advocates or professionals who work in domestic violence.
Turning the Tide is for everyone who makes up this community.
Whether you are in law enforcement, education, healthcare, child welfare, social services, the faith community, business, local government, or simply someone who wants to better understand how to support others, there is a place for you in the room.
We will begin the day in solidarity at our Day of Unity Breakfast, standing together with survivors and families impacted by domestic violence.
Then we will move into understanding through the conference, looking beyond the bruises and exploring coercive control, post-separation abuse, the impact on children, accountability, community response, and the warning signs that are too often missed.
You do not have to be an expert to attend.
You just have to be willing to learn, listen, and recognize that everyone has a role in changing the tide.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and DAC has several opportunities for our community to come together, learn, show support, and help us continue the conversation. 💜
This month is about more than wearing purple. It is about awareness, education, accountability, survivor voices, and community action.
Throughout October, we invite you to join us for events created to bring people together in different ways, from hearing survivor stories, to supporting our mission through a fun community fundraiser, to taking part in deeper conversations about domestic violence and the role we all play in prevention and response.
Our October events include Speak Out, our Bowl-a-Thon fundraiser, and our Day of Unity Breakfast & Turning the Tide Domestic Violence Conference.
Please take a look at the flyer, mark your calendars, share it with your friends, coworkers, organizations, churches, and community networks, and join us where you can.
Because domestic violence is not simply a private or household issue. It is a community issue and changing the tide will take all of us. 💜

Someone’s past may in part help explain their behavior, but it does not excuse the harm they cause.
Trauma is not permission to control, manipulate, intimidate, belittle, threaten, or abuse another person.
You can have compassion for what someone has been through and still hold them accountable for how they treat you.
Understanding their pain does not require you to keep accepting yours.
At DAC, we want survivors to know: you deserve safety, respect, and relationships that do not require you to shrink yourself to keep the peace.

Partnership strengthens response. 💜
The Domestic Abuse Council of Volusia County (DAC) is proud to partner with the Holly Hill Police Department and Family Life Center to provide law enforcement professionals with specialized training focused on responding to Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence in the field.
These encounters can be complex, and the way professionals respond in those critical moments matters. Through collaboration, education, and shared expertise, this training will help strengthen understanding of trauma, victim-centered responses, safety considerations, barriers survivors may face, and the dynamics that can impact a survivor’s decisions.
When law enforcement and victim service providers learn together, we strengthen our collective ability to recognize signs of abuse, respond with empathy, connect survivors to appropriate resources, and increase safety within our communities.
We are grateful to Holly Hill Police Department and Family Life Center for their commitment to continued learning, collaboration, and improving the response to survivors.
Because addressing Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence takes all of us working together. 💜

A few snapshots from our Back to School Splash & Monthly Birthday Party 💜
What a memorable evening for both our children and adults! From snow cones and popcorn to a full-out water balloon battle that ended with a few of our advocates completely soaked 😂, the night was filled with laughter, connection, and so much joy.
And the fun didn’t stop with the kids, the parents even took a turn down the slip ’n’ slide!
By the end of the evening, the kids were tired out, full of chili dogs and fries, and enjoying a beautiful race-themed birthday cake generously donated by Kate Caruso. 🎂
At DAC, we know that supporting families is about more than meeting immediate needs. It is also about creating opportunities for connection, normalcy, celebration, laughter, and safe memories together.
We are so grateful to everyone who helped make our Back to School Splash & Monthly Birthday Party such a special night for our families, and a special thank-you to Kate Caruso for helping us celebrate our birthday kiddos in such a sweet way. 💜

September is Su***de Prevention & Awareness Month, and for DAC, this conversation is especially important because domestic violence and su***de risk can intersect in very real ways.
Survivors may be carrying fear, isolation, trauma, financial instability, ongoing threats, stalking, coercive control, and the overwhelming weight of trying to stay safe. For some, that can also come with feelings of hopelessness or thoughts of su***de.

That is why our response matters.

We can listen without judgment.
We can believe people when they say they are struggling.
We can take warning signs seriously.
We can remind someone that asking for help is not weakness.
And we can connect people to support before a crisis becomes a tragedy.

“A time was had!” 💜
That was the exact sentiment from participants after a recent Girls’ Night at DAC and we love to see it.
The evening was created as a fun, low-pressure way for participants to relax, connect, and enjoy time together. There was music, laughter, dirty sodas, and a group viewing of Love Is Blind—but with a little DAC twist.
Participants were given handmade “red flags” to wave anytime they noticed language or behavior that felt misleading, disrespectful, disingenuous, controlling, or harmful.
What started as a fun activity quickly became a meaningful conversation about self-worth, boundaries, healthy relationships, and recognizing warning signs.
The dirty sodas were a hit, the laughter was contagious, and even more importantly, the lesson stuck. We’ve since heard that participants continued watching the show together and kept pointing out red flags as they appeared.
Sometimes education happens in a classroom. Sometimes it happens over a movie, a drink, and a whole lot of laughter.
At DAC, we believe healing can include moments of joy, connection, reflection, and learning, and this night gave us a little bit of all four. 💜

Join us on October 9th from 6 PM to close at Back Alley Lanes for a special Bowl-a-Thon fundraiser benefiting the Domestic Abuse Council of Volusia County.
Come out, have some fun, bring your family, friends, coworkers, or team, and help support survivors and families in our community.
Every frame, every strike, and every spare helps us continue providing critical services, advocacy, shelter, and support to those impacted by domestic violence.
