As you are likely aware, a decision will be made soon in the trial of Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin, which could potentially lead to civil unrest in the coming days. It is our sincere hope that circumstances surrounding these issues will not lead to unrest, which could put our residents and businesses in harm’s way. However, if the need arises, we are developing detailed plans to keep the Village of South Holland safe. These are just precautionary measures, but we are committed to proactively communicating with you regarding our plans.

If there is unrest in the region, we will close or limit access to various roadways, if necessary, just as we did in the summer of 2020. Many surrounding communities are planning to do the same. Recognizing that this can be an inconvenience, please be assured that your safety is our number one concern.

TRAFFIC PLAN
If roads leading into South Holland will be closed, we plan to have a checkpoint for residents to re-enter the village on 170th Street at Paxton Ave, heading westbound from Torrence Avenue. There is also a high likelihood that the Illinois State Police will close the 159th Street interchanges on I-80/94 and the Halsted interchanges on I-294, so please plan accordingly.

Consider running your errands, doing your grocery shopping, and filling up your vehicles’ fuel tank sooner than later. If you’re able, you may want to consider staying close to home in the coming days.

HOW WE WILL COMMUNICATE
If unrest were to occur, we may need to adjust our response plans as things develop. Our primary means of communicating will be via email and text. Click on the links below to sign up for our email and text notifications:

A message from our Chief of Police:

In light of the unrest and looting that took place in Chicago last night, the Village of South Holland is prepared to protect access to our town, should the need arise.

As of right now, all exits and entrances remain open; however, we have the necessary equipment in place to close them quickly if needed. Should we close access, we will notify residents via email,* as well as on our website and social media channels.

Thank you,

Shawn Staples

The purpose of the walk was to highlight the principles of Micah 6:8 as it relates to the nation’s current civil unrest: Act justly... Love mercy... Walk humbly.

FROM MAYOR DE GRAFF:

Dear Residents and Friends,

It is important for me to address an occurrence that took place yesterday. There is a widely-circulated video showing a racially charged incident that unfortunately took place between two South Holland residents. It saddens and pains me, and should pain all of us, that such an incident took place.

I’m sure you are aware that the Village Board and Administration denounce all racist comments and behavior. I have heard from so many of you that you are thankful and proud that we are recognized as a community with a long history of modeling diversity, inclusion, freedom, equality and justice.

With that in mind, let’s continue to join together as a community of Faith, Family and Future to shine our light brightly for all to emulate.

Although this Memorial Day looks different from years past due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we still honor all military personnel who have given their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. In this video, we brought together our first responders, musicians, and Mayor Don De Graff to honor 16 new names being added to our war monument in Veterans Memorial Park.

Today's message in part from Mayor Don DeGraff:

COVID-19 TESTING AND CASES

• I’m delighted to share with you that a new COVID-19 drive-up testing facility was opened yesterday in nearby Markham. It is located at the Vehicle Emissions Testing Station, at 3824 W 159th Place. In addition to first responders and health care workers, seniors over the age of 65 and adults with serious underlying medical conditions are eligible to be tested. The site is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. They can perform up to 800 tests per day.

• As of the time of this writing, the total number of confirmed cases in South Holland is 130, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health. While we are not privy to the details regarding each case, no doubt our significant number of nursing homes, group homes, and our overall high percentage of senior citizen population, contributes to our case count. As the situation continues to improve nationally, let’s all continue to practice social distancing as much as possible.

A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR DE GRAFF:

Dear South Holland Residents and Friends,

As you all know, we are living in a time of unprecedented upheaval. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has changed our lives in a very short period of time. This past week, we have seen announcement after announcement about closings, cancellations, precautions, and social distancing measures. The news is coming at us every which way, and after a while it can get discouraging. To that end, I say…

Have faith, my friends. We will endure.

I am confident that the South Holland community will come out of this trial stronger than ever. We must work together, however. If you are healthy, support our local restaurants by ordering takeout whenever possible. Reach out to your elderly or immunocompromised neighbors to help with groceries. While at home with kids, teach them a new life skill they may not have learned at school. These are all ways we can come together and make the very best of this unparalleled situation.

From a Village standpoint, we are taking every precaution to ensure our residents stay safe and healthy. We have implemented social distancing measures by postponing events, limiting contact at our public spaces, and cleaning our equipment, vehicles and workspaces often. Meanwhile, our Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services departments remain fully operational, 24 hours a day, and are completely prepared to handle any and all emergency matters that may arise (though we pray that will not be necessary).

To stay updated on Village announcements regarding COVID-19, text SOUTHHOLLAND to 22828 to receive email updates. We will also post all news at southholland.org/covid19.

Have hope, and pray for God’s intervention. We are South Holland strong, and we are in this together.

God’s blessings to each and every one of you,

Don A. De Graff
Mayor
