Another huge loss for our community. My sympathies and prayers for family, colleagues and friends who are heartbroken are lifting you for comfort as you travel through this pain. Sgt. Jeff DeYoung, you made us proud. You will be missed by many.

The Village of South Holland is deeply saddened to announce the death of Police Sergeant Jeff DeYoung, a longtime, faithful employee of the Village.

Jeff was only 44 years old. He died peacefully in his sleep, of what appears to be natural causes.

Sergeant DeYoung had just completed 21 years of service to the Village of South Holland in December of 2021. He was promoted to the role of sergeant just months earlier.

He was born and raised in South Holland. His childhood home is located just around the corner from the Police Department building.

He leaves behind his wife Tracy and their two children, along with many family members who are residents or natives of South Holland.

“Jeff was an incredibly valuable member of our team,” says Police Chief Shawn Staples. “Not only was he a terrific police officer, but he was well respected by his fellow officers and by South Holland residents alike. He was affable, thoughtful, and did his job well. We will miss him greatly.”

The Village sends its condolences to Jeff's family, friends, and loved ones.

Details of Sergeant DeYoung’s memorial service will be announced as they become available.

As you are likely aware, a decision will be made soon in the trial of Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin, which could potentially lead to civil unrest in the coming days. It is our sincere hope that circumstances surrounding these issues will not lead to unrest, which could put our residents and businesses in harm’s way. However, if the need arises, we are developing detailed plans to keep the Village of South Holland safe. These are just precautionary measures, but we are committed to proactively communicating with you regarding our plans.

If there is unrest in the region, we will close or limit access to various roadways, if necessary, just as we did in the summer of 2020. Many surrounding communities are planning to do the same. Recognizing that this can be an inconvenience, please be assured that your safety is our number one concern.

If roads leading into South Holland will be closed, we plan to have a checkpoint for residents to re-enter the village on 170th Street at Paxton Ave, heading westbound from Torrence Avenue. There is also a high likelihood that the Illinois State Police will close the 159th Street interchanges on I-80/94 and the Halsted interchanges on I-294, so please plan accordingly.

Consider running your errands, doing your grocery shopping, and filling up your vehicles’ fuel tank sooner than later. If you’re able, you may want to consider staying close to home in the coming days.

If unrest were to occur, we may need to adjust our response plans as things develop. Our primary means of communicating will be via email and text. Click on the links below to sign up for our email and text notifications:

Thank you for your patience and cooperation in these matters.

Today's message in part from Mayor Don DeGraff:

• I’m delighted to share with you that a new COVID-19 drive-up testing facility was opened yesterday in nearby Markham. It is located at the Vehicle Emissions Testing Station, at 3824 W 159th Place. In addition to first responders and health care workers, seniors over the age of 65 and adults with serious underlying medical conditions are eligible to be tested. The site is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. They can perform up to 800 tests per day.

• As of the time of this writing, the total number of confirmed cases in South Holland is 130, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health. While we are not privy to the details regarding each case, no doubt our significant number of nursing homes, group homes, and our overall high percentage of senior citizen population, contributes to our case count. As the situation continues to improve nationally, let’s all continue to practice social distancing as much as possible.

We know there is a lot of uncertainty right now regarding jobs and the economy. The Village of South Holland has seasonal jobs available in our Public Works and Code Enforcement departments!

If you or someone you know is looking for employment, visit our job page:

NOTE: Through the COVID-19 Stay-at-Home Order, job applications are available at our Customer Service Center, 16220 Wausau Avenue. The building is closed to the public but you can knock on the door or call 708.210.2900 upon arrival and a staff member will bring you an application. Completed applications must be deposited in the mail slot on the door of the Village Hall administration building (Building B), or in the water bill payment dropbox located in the circle drive in front of Village Hall.

As an added measure to keep yourself and others safe, Governor JB Pritzker urges all Illinois residents to wear face masks while out in public. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) provides these practical, helpful tips on where and how to wear masks effectively.

Thank you for taking these precautions and helping slow the spread!

Dear South Holland Residents and Friends,

As you all know, we are living in a time of unprecedented upheaval. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has changed our lives in a very short period of time. This past week, we have seen announcement after announcement about closings, cancellations, precautions, and social distancing measures. The news is coming at us every which way, and after a while it can get discouraging. To that end, I say…

Have faith, my friends. We will endure.

I am confident that the South Holland community will come out of this trial stronger than ever. We must work together, however. If you are healthy, support our local restaurants by ordering takeout whenever possible. Reach out to your elderly or immunocompromised neighbors to help with groceries. While at home with kids, teach them a new life skill they may not have learned at school. These are all ways we can come together and make the very best of this unparalleled situation.

From a Village standpoint, we are taking every precaution to ensure our residents stay safe and healthy. We have implemented social distancing measures by postponing events, limiting contact at our public spaces, and cleaning our equipment, vehicles and workspaces often. Meanwhile, our Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services departments remain fully operational, 24 hours a day, and are completely prepared to handle any and all emergency matters that may arise (though we pray that will not be necessary).

To stay updated on Village announcements regarding COVID-19, text SOUTHHOLLAND to 22828 to receive email updates. We will also post all news at

Have hope, and pray for God’s intervention. We are South Holland strong, and we are in this together.

God’s blessings to each and every one of you,

Don A. De Graff
