El Dorado County Fire Protection District Firefighters at Station 19 put the finishing touches on a community book exchange late Monday afternoon. This “Little Free Library” will provide free honor-system access to books in the Pleasant Valley community. Firefighters planned, proposed and constructed this project as part of a shift professional development opportunity.

Little Free Libraries are scattered throughout El Dorado County and the rest of the world; seeking to inspire reading and foster community spirit at the same time. The Little Free Library non-profit organization hosts interactive maps of libraries similar to the one at Station 19 and provides people with creative ideas on how to successfully bring these “take-a-book, leave-a-book” projects to their neighborhood or community. Over 90,000 libraries have been constructed to date.

For the Pleasant Valley community, access to a library is an over 20 minute drive. Little Free Libraries such as these can help to encourage a love of reading where books are scarce. “We found that the Pleasant Valley community did not have literature that was easily accessible and convenient. We intend that the Little Free Library will serve as a local outlet to help solve this problem,” says Firefighter/Paramedic Justin Bautista. Academically, children who grow up in homes without books are on average 3 years behind those that do have access to books, even when other factors are considered. “The Little Free Library is a great opportunity for people to enjoy reading and expand their knowledge at all ages,” says Firefighter/Paramedic Todd Pennington. Firefighters also hope that the Little Free Library will allow firefighters to meet their neighbors. “Along with the educational benefits and the ability to bring a community closer together,” Nick Aguilar, a Firefighter EMT adds, “the Little Free Library at Station 19 gives the residents the opportunity to interact with, and learn about the firefighters serving our community.”

Firefighters invite neighbors to come by and use the Little Free Library at any time. “We hope to provide a safe place to find your next reading adventure,” says Fire Captain Jacob Poganski. “I am very proud of this project and what my crew was able to put together. They eagerly accepted the challenge and saw it through to completion. It will serve as a great resource in our tight-knit Pleasant Valley community.” Firefighters largely used reclaimed and remnant materials to build the structure. Since the library is new, books are greatly needed! Local residents are encouraged to bring books in good condition and share them using Station 19’s Little Free Library. Children’s books are especially encouraged. Station 19 is located in Pleasant Valley at 4429 Pleasant Valley Rd.

Firefighters are planning a special story-hour gathering at Station 19 to share the Little Free Library with the community. Firefighters invite children and adults alike to come listen to a story, see the Little Free Library and even tour the fire engine on Saturday, January 25 from 1-2 p.m. Please bring a book to share!

We are heartbroken to share the news of Dave Schmidt’s tragic death. Dave was a LTBFA graduate from Class 8, and a vibrant member of his academy family. His big heart and his zest for life will be missed by all that knew him.

More will be posted when information regarding ways to honor him have been determined.

On November 28, 2019, at around noon, EDSO was dispatched to a report of a possible drowning in Meyers. It was believed that a person had fallen through the ice while walking their dogs. The search continued into the evening and detectives were able to determine that a man from Meyers was missing.

Cold weather clothing was found in the lake in the area where it was believed the person had fallen in. EDSO Dive Team, along with Douglas County Sheriff's Office Boat Team, Lake Valley Fire, South Lake Tahoe Fire, and EDSO Search and Rescue, continued to search the lake the following day.

Douglas County Sheriffs Office utilized their advanced ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) and were able to locate and recover the deceased person, who has been positively identified as 39 year old David Schmidt. There were no signs of foul play and all signs indicate that this was a tragic accident. Next of kin notifications have been made.

Edit: The drowning occurred at Lake Baron in Meyers. It was also determined that David had been walking three dogs at the time of the incident. All three were rescued and taken to a vet for treatment.

Firefighter/Paramedic Austin Miller is a graduate from Class 1 of the LTBFA and has worked at Rialto FD for many years. We are so proud of him and his role in this young lady’s life-saving event. ❤️

This is Nathaly on her 20th birthday. It was not how she planned on celebrating her birthday but her family and her are grateful nonetheless.

On October 13th, Rialto Firefighters were called to a CPR in progress for a then 19 year old female. When crews arrived on scene, family was doing chest compressions on Nathaly. She was not breathing and her heart had stopped beating. ME205 and MA201 immediately implemented the Rialto Cardiac Arrest Resuscitation Toolbox. Heads up CPR using AutoPulse and stat pads, apneic oxygenation, intubation with capnography and ResQPod, along with a nasogastric tube and IO line for medication administration. After performing CPR and delivering a shock to Nathaly’s heart, it began to beat on its own again. Nathaly was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center where her heart would stop beating two more times. But Nathaly is a fighter. She would bounce back again with help from the team at LLUMC.

Nathaly woke up in the hospital on October 15th. She did not recall any of the events that took place. She missed her birthday on October 14th. Five days after going into full arrest, she had a pacemaker implanted to help control her heartbeat. On October 21st, she would walk out of the hospital with a new outlook on life.

Nathaly’s mom Anna said, “I personally want to thank you for saving my daughter's life and I cannot thank you and your team enough for what you all did! Kudos for you all and the work you do, and the amazing service you give to our community. I will always keep you In my prayers.”

The crews were able to visit Nathaly in the hospital and at home after discharge.

ME205- Captain Kevin Stapleton, Engineer John Heffelfinger, Firefighter/Paramedic Austin Miller
MA201- Paramedic Anthony Killian, EMT Nathan Rennie, Paramedic Intern Max Cibelli

Happy Belated Birthday to you Nathaly! We are grateful you will be able to celebrate many more birthdays to come!!

It’s stories like these that make EVERYTHING we do worth it. Thank you Nathaly for allowing us to share your story.
