The Wilderness Education program at Lake Tahoe Community College offers academic field courses across the Sierra Nevada. Our courses challenge students to learn not only from books but also from the natural landscape. Because learning and living are integrated in the field, our courses provide opportunity for both intellectual and personal growth. We seek students with a curiosity about the natural world, a willingness to work hard, and the ability to travel and study cooperatively in an outdoor setting.

The LTBMU has a great Desolation Wilderness volunteer program. If interested in volunteering this summer, be sure to attend the upcoming March meetings.
Over the last few weeks, you may have seen the photos and read the passages, now ask yourself the following questions.
Do you love the wilderness? Are you committed to preserving its breathtaking beauty? Do you love working with people and spending time in the outdoors? Can you match your motive for volunteering to the mission and priorities of the Forest Service? Most importantly, do you have the time, willingness and dedication to volunteer and help preserve one of our most popular back-country natural areas near Lake Tahoe?
If so, the U.S. Forest Service - Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit may offer exactly what you’re looking for. We are looking for hard-working, dedicated volunteers who love working outdoors, educating wilderness visitors, performing monitoring or administrative duties and are interested in preserving one of our nation’s most beautiful wilderness areas, Desolation Wilderness. Congratulations to our Generation Green Crews! As of August 17, 2017 they have graduated from the program. The students all gathered together at South Tahoe High School the evening of August 17, to present their achivements to friends, family, and the community. Each gave a short speach about how this season impacted them and each crew put together a visual aid to help illustrate their achivements throughout the season. Generation Green has been in the Lake Tahoe Basin for 10 seasons and the crews of this year could not be a better representation of the Generation Green Program and what it stands for.
Generation Green of Lake Tahoe is a Forest Service summer youth employment program that was brought to the U.S. Forest Service - Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit by Conservation Education Program Specialist, Joy Barney. Generation Green provides local youth with work experience where students learn about various natural resource positions available when pursuing a Forest Service career. Students also learn and build a foundation in work ethics, teamwork, leadership, and job skills. . Students work on various projects ranging from System Trail building and maintenance, Urban Lot management, Tallac Historic Site maintenance, Engineering project work, and more.

Thanks to everyone who helped clean up after the Fourth!
Every piece of litter left on Lake Tahoe's beaches, or on our sidewalks and parking lots, can wind up in the Lake. Thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who removed 1,676 pounds of litter after July Fourth.
