Just a friendly reminder...Put a lid on it! The city trash ordinance requires all trash be put in a container with a tight fitting lid. Plastic bags on the street are just a lunch invitation to the local critters.

Please help by making sure your dumpsters are secure!! It just takes a second and makes a difference! If your dumpsters are secure there is less chance a bear can get in...thank you officers for setting T-Shirt free and for ALL you do!!

Yesterday morning, a bear that goes by the name “T-Shirt” got himself stuck in a dumpster in Kings Beach. He is a local bear and has had prior run-ins with our deputies. They named him “T-Shirt” because of the white patch of fur on his chest. Luckily for T-Shirt, Deputies Bertoni and Staley were able to help him get out of his predicament. 🐻

Full Circle Compost

Nice to see this! Congratulations Lake Tahoe!

How do you #climatestrike? Here at Full Circle we have to keep composting because were saving Mother Earth one compost pile at a time. Keeping organic materials out of the landfill to be turned into valuable compost to help #nevada soils grow happy, healthy, and hold more water. The healthier the soil, the healthier the plants. The more plants we grow, the more CO2 sucked from the atmosphere. This is called #carbonsequestration. Full Circle saves around 2,500 homes worth of CO2 per year through our recycling and composting efforts. Join the #compostrevolution. Join the #compostparty!

I want to thank EVERYONE for the support and engagement of the last post! We are very grateful for your care and concern! I have one more picture to add. This is a difficult one and takes the cooperation of the neighbors who share bin space. I understand it can be a pain to lock the bins after their use, but it really makes a difference! If your bins are full, contact management to contact STR. We will do everything we can to help!!

QUESTION:
If a Plastic Product is labeled "COMPOSTABLE", Can I Add It To My Home Compost Pile?
ANSWER:
According to the EPA,
No. Unless the label indicates that the product is okay for home composting, you should not try to compost it at home. Plastic that is labeled as compostable is generally intended to be sent to an industrial or commercial composting facility which has higher temperatures and different breakdown conditions than those found in a typical homeowner’s compost bin. If your community has a residential compost collection program, check with your local government or recycling company to find out if they will accept compostable plastic under this program.

PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT
As the busy recreation season kicks off we would like to remind our visitors to please dispose of waste properly. As you can see in these photos taken after Memorial Day weekend not only is garbage unsightly (and likely stinky!) but it can be harmful and even deadly to the local wildlife and other natural resources. So when you’re planning your next outdoor trip please remember to bring waste bags with you, dispose of garbage in proper receptacles or “Pack it in, Pack it out” where trash bins are not available. Let’s all do our part to protect the environment!

The Truth About Tap

Bottled or Tap?
The answer is easy when you know how single use plastic impacts the environment...…its not just the plastic though..if you turn the water off to brush your teeth( and I KNOW YOU DO!) did you know:
"Not only are millions of tons of plastic bottles clogging our landfills, but it takes 1.63 liters of water to make every liter of Dasani—and the company is doing it in drought-plagued California." https://www.nrdc.org/stories/truth-about-tap
While we may be recovering from the drought, for now, does it really make sense to use 1 1/2 times the amount of water to put it in a plastic bottle that will be throw away with a chance it may end up in a landfill, or floating in the ocean?....Hmmmmmm let's think about that!!

Lots of people think drinking bottled water is safer. Is it?

The Next Generation -

Since 1962 South Tahoe Refuse and Recycling has been engaged in the prudent management of household and commercial garbage. The next generation of Lehmans, Tillmans and Marchini Families are still in full service to the community. Due to the unique and sensitive region of our service area, collection services demand continuous adjustments in best practices to keep pace with the ever-changing demographics. It is the unwavering commitment to an environment with specialized needs that has compelled South Tahoe Refuse toward certain changes in philosophies, procedural disciplines, and service programs.

The collaboration of local agencies, authorities, and collection services has resulted in the combined endeavors to address two important aspects of globally accepted core sustainability principles, and the local designation for the care of our region’s delicate biosphere.

· The Domain of Life: Providing for changes in behavior that respects the balance of relationships between different forms of life while sharing the same physical space.

· The Spiritual Domain: Ethical behavior by society regardless of setting. The attitudinal orientation for actions to positively reinforce sustainability practices on a local level, incorporating the strategy for awareness and change.

It is with these core principles we ask that everyone who shares our community, whether permanently or as a visitor, keep in mind respect for this amazing place. We are the care takers charged with the responsibility to preserve the delicate balance between humans and the environment.

Thank you in advance for your support!
