February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

Dating relationships between teenagers can be incredibly complicated. The undertaking of a relationship, very often, requires more maturity than most teens have developed. These relationships are more likely to be riddled with problems include communication, jealousy and selflessness.
As a result, teenagers are more likely to be involved in relationships that are unhealthy, violent, and/or abusive. If you are a teenager involved in a romantic relationship it is important to understand the behaviors that may point to an unhealthy and/or abusive relationship. It is important to educate teens on red flags, consent, boundaries and healthy relationships as TDV is common. 1 in 3 high school students experience either physical or sexual violence, or both, that is perpetrated by someone they are dating. The average age teens begin to experience abuse is between 11 and 24! LVF will be sharing info on TDV throughout the month. #TDVAM #TDVAM20 #ornage4love #chalkaboutlove #loveisresepect

For a Survivor of Stalking, Words Matter - Futures Without Violence

"According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, 16% of women and 5% of men have experienced stalking in their lifetime...Survivors need us to be more aware and help remove the stigma so they are not deterred from getting help. But we must first take the term
'stalking' as seriously as its threat."

It's National Stalking Awareness Month. Read an interview with a survivor that will help you realize why the word "stalker" isn't something to be taken lightly."

You’ve heard it before. Someone casually mentions that they’re “stalking” someone or something. They doubtlessly intend to say that they’re tracking something benign, like occasionally checking a love interest’s social media profiles or the availability of an item they want on an e-comme...

Self-Care is the way to go!

We are coming up on the end of the month in our first month of 2020. Let's all remember to care about our physical, emotional and mental selves to make us the best we can be this year. It is okay to take a break and do some self love. It's vital to be 100%. When we get busy we often forget to practice self-care but it could make those mondays a little less grueling! Keep being awesome!

I read an interesting article on parenting today written by a women who explained her personal experience of sexual assault as a young women. She also discussed rape allegations and victim blaming. She among many others, have never met a man who was falsely accused of rape but she as well as many others know several women who were victims of sexual assault. She is a mother of a young son and she has had conversations of the birds and the bees, consent, body safety and what makes him feel safe. Her son is well on his way to learning the importance of healthy relationships. She someday intends to talk about her experience as a young women. I loved this article because Teen Dating Violence Month is coming up and so many teens fall victim of unsafe relationships. At the end she says something very thought provoking. Here is a little piece!

I’ve Talked With Teenage Boys About Sexual Assault for 20 Years. This Is What They Still Don’t Know

"They learn about sex from friends, and from internet porn, where scenes of non-consensual sex abound. No one has ever explained the laws to them. They don’t understand that consent needs to be informed, enthusiastic, sober, ongoing and freely given." Educating our teens and talking about consent, boundaries and healthy relationships are so important with all the social pressures and negative information they face today.

Author Laurie Halse Anderson shares her insights into what we aren't telling our boys

Stalking is a common occurrence in Domestic Violence. WHY?
Seeking Affection‼️
Power & Control‼️
Obsession or Rejection‼️
Planning to commit a crime‼️
Because they can‼️
Stalkers in intimate partner violence, are more likely to physically approach a victim, they are more threatening and vulgar, more likely to use weapons and their behavior is more likely to escalate quickly- and sometimes go as far as lethal action against their victim. It is serious and dangerous.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and today, January 11, is Human Trafficking Awareness Day. It is estimated that up to 40.3 million people around the world are being trafficked, and sex trafficking is one of the world's fastest growing criminal industries. Girls and Boys are sold for profit and used and exploited. It happens everywhere not just the major cities. California has some of the highest rates of trafficking because of LA, San Diego and Sacramento.

Stalking occurs when someone repeatedly harasses or threatens someone else, causing fear or safety concerns. According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS), about 1 in 6 women and 1 in 17 men have experienced stalking in their lifetimes. It strips someone of their personal safety, not knowing what will happen. When perpetrators lose power and control they escalate their behavior by stalking. It is a very serious and dangerous situation.

Predators don't inflict violence on a person because of what they are wearing. They do it for power and control. Just because someone is drinking or dresses up for a night on the town does not mean the person is asking to be violated without consent. End victim blaming.

Consent is important. People shouldn't feel coerced to be in a relationship or to participate in intimate relations. They shouldn't be guilted or intimated. When someone feels scared to say no, that isn't consent. Safety and respect are important parts of a healthy relationship.

There are so many strong and resilient survivors in our state of California that have experience such a pervasive trauma. Places like Live Violence Free are spread across California to assist those survivors so they do not have to go through it alone. No one should ever have to face sexual assault alone. Survivors should be heard and believed.

FYI- Victim Blaming leads to more survivors being silenced. You don't have to be black and blue to be sexually assaulted. Believe it or not, the majority of people who commit sexual assault are likable individuals, it's part of their facade. Traumatic situations can sometimes prevent a victim from fighting back and instead, their reaction is to freeze. Flirting doesn't equal consent. Going to parties doesn't make sexual assault okay. Sexual assault is an under-reported crime. Many survivors have a hard time voicing their experiences because of fear, shame or fear of not being believed. Lets start giving survivors a safe space to talk. #Meetoo #consent #believesurvivors #survivor #supportsurvivors #raiseawareness #victimblaming #nomeansno #youarenotalone #endthesilence

You need to change your name to live domestic violence free. I came to you for help and you turned me away just because I never slept with the man. The man came back to my home through my front door and terrorized me and my children for 20 minutes before he ran from the police. My children are tramatized because you turned us away! My children's lives we're in danger because you turned us away. Shame on you and your organization for representing yourselves as a way to help get violence out of their lives! Change your name to a domestic violence help center. Don't give people in fear for there children false hope that someone will listen and help.
