Crocodile Safety & Awareness | Bob Welsh Park

The City of South Miami is sharing important safety guidance following reports of crocodile sightings near Bob Welsh Park, located at 7435 SW 66th Avenue, South Miami, FL 33143.

The City’s Public Works Department promptly coordinated with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and an FWC officer visited the park to assess the area and make observations.

American crocodiles are federally protected wildlife, and their handling and relocation are strictly regulated. Residents and visitors can help promote safe coexistence by following these precautions:

- Keep children supervised and away from canal edges.
- Keep pets leashed and supervised at all times, away from the water’s edge.
- Never approach or feed a crocodile.
- Remain alert near canals and waterways, especially at dusk and dawn.

See a crocodile or have a wildlife concern? Contact the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-866-392-4286 (1-866-FWC-GATOR). Do not approach or attempt to handle the animal.

For canal maintenance questions, contact the City’s Public Works Department at 305-403-2063.

South Miami Maintains Functional Zero

At its most recent Commission Meeting, South Miami Police Chief Reo Hatfield III presented awards recognizing the collaborative efforts that have helped the City maintain Functional Zero across three consecutive Point-in-Time Counts.

The recognition honored Officer Ashley Soler and Detective Marcus Prather of SMPD, New Hope Corps, Miami Recovery Project, South Miami Hospital, and Sunset Place. South Miami Hospital and Sunset Place provided donations to help secure shelter beds, while New Hope Corps and Miami Recovery Project coordinate shelter placements and connect individuals with additional resources. Officer Soler and Detective Prather help identify individuals in the community who may benefit from these services.

Special recognition goes to Vice Mayor Brian Corey for his continued commitment and hands-on efforts supporting this initiative.

Through the City’s investment and these community partnerships, South Miami’s Point-in-Time Count decreased from a historical 15–20 individuals to just two in August 2026, demonstrating continued progress toward stable housing and access to essential resources.
