Hello South Milwaukee Friends! My name is Megan Zienkiewicz and I am running to be your municipal court judge.
I have been called to this position because of my dedication to justice for all. I have spent a considerable amount of time in a courtroom as a litigator and I know the importance of the judge in shaping the experience of everyone involved. It is my intention that all parties who come before the court are treated with respect and know that they are before a judge who will hear what they have to say and will decide their case with an open mind.
Let me tell you a little more about myself. I am currently an adjunct assistant professor at Carthage College teaching Trial Practice and Rules of Evidence, Business Law, Sports Law, and International Law. Prior to teaching at Carthage, I retired from the Wisconsin State Public Defender's Office where I worked for 20 years, litigating a wide variety of cases. I was the Local Attorney Manager for the Racine Office and Racial and Ethnic Disparity Practice Coordinator for the agency. I also had the pleasure of serving as a team member of the Wisconsin Veterans Treatment Court for the 2nd Judicial District.
I have been a sought after presenter allowing me to share my knowledge with a wide variety of legal professionals. I have presented at the Wisconsin Municipal Judges’ Association Judicial Education Conference. I have frequently presented on issues surrounding Racial Disparity, including the Race Discussion Circles, Responding to Racism, Implicit Bias, and Racial Anxiety. I have been privileged to present at the YWCA Madison’s Circle of Women Luncheon, the National Legal Aid and Defender Association Annual Conference, and for the New York County Defender Services Training. I regularly presented at the Wisconsin State Public Defender’s Annual Conference and Trial Skills Academy. I have also been published in the Wisconsin Bar Association’s Juvenile Law Handbook.
I have been honored as a Top Up-And-Coming Wisconsin Attorney in Super Lawyers and Milwaukee Magazine, and as a member of the Rubin Society of the Wisconsin State Public Defender for my work with children. I am the proud recipient of the 2016 Chiarkas Award from the Wisconsin State Public Defender in recognition of my innovative leadership efforts. At Marquette University, I completed my Juris Doctor and Master of Arts in Public Service with an Administration of Justice specialization. Outside of law, I am an accredited master figure skating coach and skating school director.
