What an awesome event tonight at Cannon Park next to our community garden! Days like this make me proud to call South River home. With a little imagination and creative spirit, we can bring community and excitement to our public spaces. Already psyched to do it again next year.

The SR TV35 Team has been working hard to update the aging infrastructure this year and they’ve finally gotten to the next steps! We’re looking for volunteers to grow our programming and operations. We want to be able to feature more sports, more news pieces, and have it become the voice of community in the borough. Reach out if you’re interested!

I want to commend the South River Police Department for putting on a wonderful event for all ages, tonight. National Night Out promotes community-police partnership and I’m a huge fan of the major work the Department does year round to build bridges into every community-group in our small borough. Here’s a photo taken by my colleague, Sandra Adelino, who also happened to volunteer me for the dunk tank. Thanks Sandra...can’t wait to repay the favor. 😉

The 2018 Insider 100: Millennials - Insider NJ

I'm truly honored to be recognized as an #Insider100Millenial. The 2018 list is full of brilliant, talented, young women and men from all political spectrums in New Jersey, many that I consider close friends. Honestly, I'm blown away. It's great to see the Borough of South River being paid attention to beyond our borders. If I could say one though on the write-up, though: the values I hold aren't "millenial" values, they're universal and focused on building community.

If interested, check out page 41.

Download Insider NJ’s 2018 Insider 100: Millennials publication.   Here they come. Well, a lot of them have already been around for a while, sharpening their teeth in the political arena in their teens and now hitting their stride at last in their 30s. Others are just getting started. But whether...

Borough of South River | SERVICE•locator

Now that our "DO•it" suite of services is maturing, we're working to integrate them around the borough in a number of ways. Every service in this suite launched in the past 18 months and we're working hard to continue getting the word out so that our residents know the great many resources available to them. We want everyone to use them and have access to them, even offline.

With these services, you can now:

- Report concerns that are tracked and responded to in the borough.
- Find jobs and get job training.
- Search for service providers in a wide number of languages.
- Report potholes.
- Register and pay for recreation programs online.
- Get notified of trash and recycling schedules and info.
- Submit to the Monthly Buzz

We have a lot more ideas for how to improve these experiences and offering offline solutions to the same for those who may not be technically proficient. The Communications Committee and Finance Committee have made these efforts a reality. I'm proud of the work and time my colleagues Shawn Haussermann, Julie Meira, Jack Alai, and Sandra Adelino contributed to make these ideas a reality.

Borough of South River | SkillUp™ Middlesex

Building partnerships is a key part of good governance. My colleagues on the council and I have been building relationships that never existed before because we reach out, have conversations, and follow up.

I'm really excited to launch this new service that I believe will positively impact residents that might not be satisfied with where they are professionally. I was there last year after I lost my job. SkillUp is a partnership between the Borough and the County to assists those searching for jobs or seeking job training to be able to better market themselves. I invite you to sign up!

We've partnered with Middlesex County to provide residents with a new way to find jobs and assist with job training. SkillUp is free of charge, allows you to train for industry recognized certification, and flexible to allow you to train at your own pace.

Borough of South River | Garbage & Recycling Information

It’s really difficult to highlight all of the ways in which we’re trying to improve the experiences for residents in the borough. We’ve spent considerable time building out the information on our website so they can be accessed in a moments notice from anywhere. We’ve also built new methods of obtaining that info, from the Borough page, the Monthly Buzz, and the updated annual calendar.

Our focus over the past 16 months is organizing repairing, and improving the assets in our Borough. Many of these things have never been given attention or were neglected for years. We’ve still got a long list of to-dos, but we’re getting there.

Things are rising in South River. It’s only been 18 months, but I think things are starting to look up in so many places. There’s so much more to work on, and many more ideas to implement. But we’re making progress.

Today I woke up this morning to help weed the Great Lawn at our new Community Garden. This project is really coming together. Afterwards, I attended South River’s first official Portuguese Flag Raising, organized by our new Human Relations Commission.

Being an elected official means finding relationships and partnerships that weren’t there yesterday. Share your ideas. Together we’ll find even more green roots starting to peak their head in South River.

The Borough never ceases to impress me when it comes to the respect and attention paid to our fallen veterans and service individuals. This morning’s American Legion ceremonies at the local cemeteries were excellent, as usual, and the Fire Department held their first ceremony at the new Firehouse, which was beautiful. I’m sorry I missed the VFW ceremony, which I heard was similarly moving. I was also able to stop by the grave of my grandparents and great-grandparents and remember for a moment their love for me and my family.

In between the picnics and family gatherings, my only request is for you to take such a moment to reflect on the service of others that makes all of this possible.

Happy Memorial Day.

I'm incredibly proud of the work of South River's dedicated public safety employees and volunteers, but was particularly moved by this week's Middlesex 200 Club Award Banquet where Ex-Chief Louis Bongiovi, Sr., Asst. Chief Jan Petrik, and Seargeant Kevin Nielsen were presented with Valor Award for their bravery and composure during a borough fire last year. They deserve the borough's highest praise and South River is lucky to have public servants like this. As members of the Public Safety Committee, Jack Alai and I, along with our own Assemblywoman, Nancy Pinkin, were thrilled to attend the luncheon held in their honor.

"On the afternoon of April 7, 2017, South River Police Department patrol units were dispatched to a structure fire at a multi-family residence. The first Officers to arrive on the scene was Sgt. Kevin Nielsen. Flames could be seen coming from the third floor windows of the residence. Citizens on the scene reported to Sgt. Nielsen that an elderly man was still in his apartment on the third floor.

Despite the risk of personal harm, with no protective gear, Sgt. Nielsen made entry into the residence and made his way to the third floor but was pushed back by heavy black smoke.

The South River Fire Department arrived on the scene. Assistance Chief Jan Petrik made entry through a rear door to begin a primary search where he was met with heavy smoke. Ex-Chief Louis Bongiovi, Sr. made entry using the front door. The two firefighters met on the third floor and located the victim who was unconscious but still breathing. They were able to carry the individual away from the immediate fire and out the front steps. A search was continued for additional victims but there were none."

We were able to secure a large number of seedlings from the DEP to continue efforts to restore our Shade Tree covering in the Borough. Last year was the first year we planted more trees than we cut. This year we're working even harder to address this challenge. The Shade Tree/Environmental Commission is hosting two tree plantings this year and we'll be installing more appropriate facade trees in the Downtown area as part of the overall revitalization efforts.

We’re hard at work to make improvements both small and large. We just launched our new web app to provide trash and recycling information available to you at anytime.

I worked closely with Public Works to make this a reality. I’m proud of how it turned out.

This is what South River can be!

This morning we had over 70 volunteers join together for the Spring Community Cleaning, going along the various streets in the lower portion of our borough to reclaim South River. The "Friends of the South River Community Garden" a local 501(c)(3) is showing us the way.

Afterwards, I joined representatives of the Polish Government and other community leaders to celebrate our second Flag Raising in South River. Last year I fought hard to appoint members to the Human Relations Commission that sat vacant for many years. As liaison, I am so proud of the fruits of this Commission's labor starting to take shape. Great job to Anita Chadha, Orly Tamayo, Irina DaSilva, Angela Cadenas, Zo Mode, Colleen Toole, and Sue Olsen.

South River has a tremendous amount of young talent. I’m proud to call Ruell my friend and colleague.

Make no mistake about it: Our borough needs the hope and ideas of the younger generation to sift through the greatness of our past and push through the challenges we presently face. Our younger generation isn’t bogged down with the infighting and political stagnation that plagues our society today. Instead, their new ideas and energy allow us to turn a new page.

I’m always looking for new faces who have real ideas to get involved. We appointed nearly a dozen this year to bring real solutions to very real challenges. Message me if you know someone who fits that image.

2018 Fellow Ruell Calvin Brown lives in South River and currently works as an Android Developer at BAMTech Media. He previously held a similar role at The New York Times. He is also the CEO/Founder of Bamplify LLC, a company that implements software engineering solutions. Ruell is a graduate of Rutgers University and served in the military, during which he was deployed to Iraq in 2005 and 2008. He serves his town as a district committeeman on the county committee, Green Team member/secretary, TV-35 Advisory board member, lifetime member of both the American Legion and VFW posts, and board member of a local nonprofit. #NLCFamily #NLCNJ #NLC

Borough of South River | Communications Policy

Keeping residents informed of what's going on in South River has been a primary focus of mine since taking office. I'm so thrilled to launch this effort.

A lot of hard work has gone into making this entire effort possible. Leading the way has been the brilliant Communications Committee, led by John Costello and Sandra Adelino. Our Councilwoman Julie Meira has provided significant guidance as well.

This year has been a foundational year for South River, laying the groundwork behind the scenes to make progress for years ahead.
