This is the hero we lost last night. Philadelphia Police Officer Richard Mendez was 50 years old and a 22 year veteran when he interrupted a car burglary at Philadelphia International Airport parking deck Thursday night. He was shot multiple times and a fellow officer was also shot. His murder has shaken us all.

He leaves behind a wife and daughter. Our hearts go out to his family and friends.

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the passing of one of our retired brothers, Chief Eib. Chief Eib started in 1962 and had a very successful career climbing to the rank of Chief in 1990. After 38 dedicated years of service to the Borough of South River and our agency, he happily retired in 2000. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Chief Eib’s family and friends.

An artwork contest was held between April 4th to May 1st by the South River PBA and the South River Middle School. Students were asked to create a graphic, picture, or collage showing our local officers interacting with the community. Congratulations to Sophia Gerba and Victoria Silva for winning this year’s contest. Scholarships were awarded for their hard work. We look forward to hosting this event next year!

***UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENT***

South River PBA Local 62 will be hosting its first ever Junior Home Run Derby at Grekoski Park on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 10AM! We are looking for 75 contenders (boys and girls - 10 to 12 years old) to participate in the derby itself. Other games will be available as well to all others! Home run distances will be modified.

First 75 applications received will be entered into the derby! Open to South River Residents ONLY up until July 15th. If more spots are available after that date, registration will then be open to surrounding town residents.

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the passing of one of our retired brother officers, LT. Edward Michael Kelly. LT. Kelly was appointed to the South River Police Department in 1951 and retired in 1980 after a long and successful career. Local 62 sends our condolences to the member’s of LT. Kelly’s family and friends. Rest In Peace.

This morning, during the 8th Grade Awards Ceremony, South River PBA Local 62 awarded Shiza Hussain as the winner for the first annual T-Shirt Contest, which was held from March 1st to May 1st. It was asked by the 8th Grade class to come up with a design which would incorporate South River and the PBA. Shiza was awarded $500, as she plans to use the money towards her future college. We would also like to thank Vice Principal Shawna Iazzetta for all her help to make this event successful. Plans are in the works to feature her design on a t-shirt at South River Day on June 18th. Quantity will be limited. Congratulations to Shiza and thank you to all who participated in this year’s event. South River Local 62 sends our thoughts and prayers to our brothers and sisters of the . Police Officer Jason Rivera was murdered in the line of duty on January 21, 2022 while responding to a domestic violence incident. A second police officer, Wilbert Mora was also shot and is critically injured. May our brother Rest In Peace.

Last night Local 62 celebrated our Christmas party and honored two of our recently retired brothers, Sergeant Kevin Nielsen and Patrolman Christopher Monek. Local 62 wants to wish these two officers all the best on their future endeavors and a big congratulations on retirement! It has been a pleasure and honor to work along side these two officers. Thank you to for the amazing cake and thank you to the for hosting us!

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the passing of two of our retired brother officers from Local 62, Lieutenant Carl Rossi and Sergeant Walter “Blackie” Sudnikovich. Both officers served the Police Department and the Borough of South River with duty, honor, courage and respect. Local 62 sends our condolences to the members of each family.
