On 10/17, UA student organizers, working as part of the No Compact 9—a coalition of the nine initial campuses sent the “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education”—held a march and rally at Old Main.

Hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and wider Tucson community members attended. We gathered together to unite and send a message to Garimella, ABOR, and senior admin: Don’t sign. Don’t fold. No loyalty oath. No compact.

As much as senior admin and ABOR have suppressed and disregarded our voices, our organizing and mobilization prevented the complete closure of DEIA programs last semester. This fall, we continue that fight. There is so much more to do to ensure this campus is safe, accountable, and accessible to those most targeted by fascism: immigrant and international students, students of color, trans and q***r students, and essential workers that all make the UA run.

“HOW MUCH WILL UA COMPLY? THEY’LL TAKE MORE THAN DEI!”
The University of Arizona’s compliance with anti-DEI policies enacted by the Trump regime is a slippery slope. How much more will they wager, and how many students, staff, and faculty will be affected? Will they prosecute student protestors for speaking out against genocide like Columbia? Will they continue to allow ICE on campus? Will they allow for the policing of student bodies?
The freedom of academia to act independently from government control and corporate interests is a struggle that has been constantly fought for at UA, and executive orders have only worsened the problem. Tucson must act to protect its residents and encourage an environment in which the University will uphold human rights and listen to the wants and needs of its student body.

Our city officials have done little to protect us from the sweeping changes of the Trump administration, with propositions that do little to actually benefit the community in a meaningful way. We must fight back and demand their attention and demand their action. a late post, but looking at these pictures of the Tucson All Souls Procession and the memorial of our dead, i want to remind everyone that billionaires don’t deserve our remembrance, our forgiveness, or our pity.
when we become desensitized to state violence our only choice is to fight back. these agents of exploitation deserve far worse than death for the countless lives they have taken. they have never and will never care for us, but we are the many and they are the few ✊🏽

Join us on Sunday, November 3rd for Tucson’s All Souls Procession! We wish to be in solidarity and hold a space to grieve all those who have been lost this past year due to the abortion ban along with the lives lost in the continued genocide in Palestine.

We will meet at 4pm in front of Barista del Barrio.
Please read about the All Souls Procession if you haven’t participated before.
It is imperative that we are reverent to this tradition. To do this, we encourage everyone to dress in procession-appropriate attire, including Calavera face makeup and comfortable shoes.
Feel free to make and hold signs or candles honoring the lives of people we have lost.
