Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, and we all have a role to play.

It isn't helpful to tell people to make better choices or to judge those who use drugs. Stigma from community members, doctors, and policy makers often keeps people from asking for help, and misinformation about drugs and the people who use them can have devastating consequences.

People who use drugs are still people. Many of us who know and love someone who has experimented or used some sort of substance. You don't need to have an addiction to overdose. It can happen to anyone at any time.

There are life-saving kits, medications, and tools that are easily accessible and can prevent or reverse so many overdoses. Even if you have opinions and judgements surrounding drug use, why opt to be a helpless bystander when you can instead be prepared to save a life?

Choose to be an advocate, support your neighbors, treat others with compassion, educate yourself, and use your voice. Help create a community where we choose compassion over stigma and action over silence.

Grief is something we all experience at some point in our lives. And no matter who you are or how strong you are, grief can turn your world upside down.

It can affect us in ways that are obvious and easy to recognize, but also in subtle ways that change how we feel, think, and move through our lives. It often happens when we lose someone, but we can also experience it when we reflect on missed opportunities, lost time, or other versions of ourselves.

If you’re grieving, know that there is no timeline and no right or wrong way to feel. Grief is incredibly complex and can look very different for each of us. But you also deserve community, healing, and the chance to keep living your life.

Today is Grief Awareness Day, and we want to remind you that you don’t have to navigate grief alone. Sometimes, it can be easier to open up to someone outside of your personal life. Someone who can unbiasedly listen, support you, and help you process what you're carrying. See the graphic for local resources that can help you find your way to the other side of grief. .

After a long week, it can be tempting to turn to substances or your phone thinking it'll help you decompress, but those habits don’t always leave us feeling our best. It’s the weekend! You deserve to actually enjoy it! ❤️

Here are 20 ways to make the most of your time:

1. Go for a bike ride (when winter comes, you'll wish you could!)
2. Plan a trip to the movies, or do an at-home movie night with your favorite blankets and snacks
3. Meet a friend for lunch
4. Start or end one of your days with a yoga class
5. Work on a new craft or project
6. Bake something
7. Put on an audiobook, podcast, or playlist and organize your space
8. Find a local trail and go for a walk
9. Make a vision board
10. Have a self care night! Take a warm bath, put on a face mask, whatever makes you feel pampered
11. Try a new restaurant, or treat yourself to a meal at your favorite spot
12. Get coffee and go to the museum
13. Have a game night with friends or family
14: Lay under a tree and read a book
15: Take a trip to the beach or lake! (you'll also wish you could do this in winter)
16: Write a letter to someone you love or miss and send it in the mail as a surprise
17: Make a gratitude list
18: Watch the sun rise or set
19: Go for a picnic
20: Connect with your inner child! Dance to your favorite songs, swing on the swings at the park, color for the sake of coloring, make your favorite meal from your childhood.

This is your sign to do something nice for yourself today!

Grab your favorite coffee. Sit outside and take in your surroundings. Grab some snacks and read a book or watch a movie. Have a self care night. It's so easy to get caught up in our to do lists. Remember that getting rest and indulging in some enjoyment is also productive. 💛

Affirmations can feel awkward... especially if self-love or vulnerability doesn't feel natural for you! But research suggests that practicing affirmations for even just a few weeks can have significant effects on well-being, self-perception, and self-worth, while also helping reduce negative feelings like anxiety and low mood.

Here are some affirmations we’ve been loving lately! Consider giving them a try. It's okay to feel a little silly or like you're forcing the words out at first. The impact comes over time and feels more natural as you go. We just want you to know you deserve kindness, especially from yourself.

This Fentanyl Awareness and Prevention Day, we feel called to say that people who use drugs are still people. They deserve compassion, support, and to be seen as whole people. They don’t deserve to be written off or defined by substance use.

Because addiction can happen to anyone, regardless of race, income, identity, or background. Fentanyl continues to be a leading cause of death among people ages 18 to 45. It’s increasingly found in illicit drugs, often without people knowing they’ve taken it. That’s why we need to have conversations, compassion, and access to resources.

Narcan, an easy to use nasal spray, can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose and restore breathing. It’s often available for free or at low cost through health departments and community programs. Please consider carrying it, even if you don’t personally know someone dealing with addiction. Don’t just be a bystander. A prepared community is a safer community.

Financial support is available for South Windsor residents receiving or looking to receive treatment and recovery services. Contact Liz Langevin at 860-648-5050 or [email protected] to learn more. And if you love someone who is struggling with addiction or has lost their life to substance, you don’t have to navigate it alone. We see you, our hearts are with you. Resources for processing grief and loss are available as well.
