Steam, mountains, and history—our next stop is Chama, New Mexico! Today, August 3, marks 250 years since the Domínguez–Escalante Expedition traveled through the Chama Valley, crossing the Rio Chama and continuing north toward the mountains of present-day southern Colorado.

More than a century later, this same rugged landscape became home to the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, whose narrow-gauge line over Cumbres Pass, built in 1880, helped connect communities, support mining and ranching, and open the San Juan Mountains to commerce. Today, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad preserves and operates a remarkable portion of that historic route as a National Historic Landmark, allowing visitors to experience one of America’s most celebrated surviving steam railroads.

As part of the Cross and Culture Relay, we were honored to visit Chama and the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, where representatives welcomed us for a brief commemorative stop and signed the ceremonial cross. Photographing the cross alongside a historic Denver & Rio Grande Western steam locomotive created a meaningful connection between two eras of exploration and transportation in the American Southwest.

A sincere thank you to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Commission and the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad for your warm hospitality and for helping commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Domínguez–Escalante Expedition. We’re grateful to have you as part of the Cross and Culture Relay.

Today’s post from Follow the Friars follows the Domínguez–Escalante Expedition on August 3, 1776, as they crossed the Rio Chama and continued northwest through northern New Mexico.

As we reflect on our visit to Chama during the Cross and Culture Relay, these daily journal entries provide wonderful historical context for the places we’re visiting 250 years later.

As the Cross and Culture Relay continues north, we’re also following the Domínguez–Escalante Expedition one day at a time through the excellent historical updates shared by Follow the Friars.

Today’s post follows the expedition on August 2, 1776, as they continued their journey beyond Abiquiú and deeper into northern New Mexico. Their daily journal excerpts, historical insights, and beautiful photography provide wonderful context for the places we’re visiting along the relay.

From Santa Fe to Abiquiú, the journey continues.

After departing Santa Fe, Fathers Domínguez and Escalante and their companions traveled north through the Rio Grande Valley before reaching the Abiquiú area—the last Spanish settlement they would see before entering the vast frontier of the American Southwest.

One of the first stops of the Cross and Culture Relay brings us to Abiquiú, New Mexico, where we visited Santo Tomás Church, built in 1937 on the site of Abiquiú’s historic parish, a community whose roots stretch back to the 18th century and the era of the expedition.

Today, August 1, marks exactly 250 years since the expedition departed the Abiquiú area, leaving behind the last Spanish settlement they would see for several months as they journeyed into the unknown.

One of the goals of the Cross and Culture Relay is to reconnect today’s communities with the places and stories that shaped this remarkable expedition. As we continue our journey through New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah, we’ll be sharing the history behind each stop and celebrating the communities that continue to preserve this shared heritage.

To complement the relay, we’ll also be sharing daily historical posts from Follow the Friars, an independent project that follows the Domínguez–Escalante Expedition day by day, exactly 250 years later. Their journal excerpts, historical insights, and stunning photography provide a fascinating look at the expedition’s journey, and we hope you’ll enjoy following along with both projects.

As the Cross and Culture Relay retraces the route of the Domínguez–Escalante Expedition, we’d like to highlight the excellent daily historical posts being shared by Follow the Friars.

Each day, we’ll be sharing their updates as they follow the expedition’s journey exactly 250 years later, providing excerpts from Escalante’s journal, historical context, and beautiful photography from along the route.

We hope you’ll enjoy following their work alongside the Cross and Culture Relay as together they provide both the modern journey and the story of the original expedition.

It all began in Santa Fe… and so does the Cross and Culture Relay. At 10:00 a.m. this morning, exactly 250 years to the hour after Fathers Atanasio Domínguez and Silvestre Vélez de Escalante departed Santa Fe on their historic 1776 expedition, the Cross and Culture Relay officially began in Santa Fe Plaza.

We were honored to be joined by representatives from the City of Santa Fe, the New Mexico History Museum, and the Old Santa Fe Association as we gathered near the Palace of the Governors to commemorate this remarkable anniversary before beginning the relay’s journey through the American Southwest.

Over the coming weeks, the Cross and Culture Relay will travel through New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah, visiting communities connected to the expedition’s historic route and celebrating the people, cultures, and stories that continue to shape our shared heritage.

This is just the beginning! We’ll be sharing photos and highlights from each stop along the relay as we make our way to Spanish Fork for the Domínguez–Escalante 250: Crossroads of Cultures commemorative ceremony on Friday, September 18, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. in Spanish Fork City Park.

We invite you to follow along as we retrace this remarkable journey and celebrate 250 years of exploration, heritage, and community.
