The City of Sparta Utilities Department is notifying the public that a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) occurred on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at approximately 8:30 a.m. near 276 Jamie L. Kennedy Blvd., Sparta, Georgia.

The overflow was contained and stopped by approximately 12:30 p.m. An estimated 9,600 gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed from a manhole onto dry land. The spill did not enter state waters.

City crews responded promptly to contain the overflow, clean the affected area, and begin corrective actions. The cause of the overflow was due to fats, oils, and grease building in the sewer lines.

🚧 Water Service Update – University Lane Area

Residents in the University Lane area may experience low water pressure or water outages.

Our crews have located the problem (a collapsed water line) and have been working throughout the day to restore service. We used the materials we had on hand, but additional parts are needed to complete the job. Those parts are expected to arrive tomorrow morning, and crews will be back to work as soon as they are received.

This repair will take a little longer than normal as we are replacing several hundred feet of pipe and each home must be reconnected to the new water line. Additionally, the work must be done carefully and safely due to the depth of the line in some areas.

We know water service is important, and we appreciate your patience as we work to get everyone back to normal as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Q&A: Why do some City projects take so long?

It is not unusual for a major project to take several years from the first discussion to completion. While residents may not always see activity at the project site, work is often continuing behind the scenes.

Before construction can begin, the City may need to identify funding, apply for grants, complete engineering and environmental reviews, obtain permits, acquire easements, advertise for bids, and order materials. Many of these steps involve state or federal agencies and must be completed in a specific order.

Grant-funded projects can take even longer because the City must follow the funding agency’s review, approval, and reimbursement requirements.

We understand that waiting can be frustrating. A project taking time does not necessarily mean it has been forgotten or abandoned. It often means the City is working through the required process to secure funding, protect public resources, and make sure the project is completed correctly.

Underground utility lines may be located closer to the surface than expected. Having them marked before digging helps prevent service interruptions, property damage, injuries, and costly repairs.
