Geneva’s Story
Geneva was born on January 31st, 2013. She was a happy healthy little girl. When we had her 6 month well baby check up we were caught completely off guard when we were told they felt a mass in her abdomen, this turned out to be a Neuroblastoma tumor. We were so shocked, she had no symptoms, we had no reason to suspect something was going on. In only one short week from that appointment our sweet girl had surgery to remove the 1/2 pound tumor that was in her abdomen. During surgery the pediatric surgeon didn’t like the look of a couple of her lymph nodes and he removed those as well as one of her adrenal glands as this is where the Neuroblastoma tumor originates from. We are so thankful that he noticed those lymph nodes as the biopsy of them showed tumors that were starting to grow in them that hadn’t shown up on the MIBG scan. Geneva was staged at 2B. After her surgery, she had a rough start to recovery. She woke up in a lot of pain and they struggled to get her pain under control. We were in the PEDS ICU and she had some complications and coded. We were frozen in place watching them work on our little girl, praying she would make it through. She had to be placed back on the ventilator and ended up with vent associated pneumonia. After the first couple days after surgery she really started to improve. We were fortunate that the tumor had still been encapsulated, and with the removal of those lymph nodes she did not have to have chemo or radiation. We had very close follow up to ensure that it wasn’t coming back.
We have been tremendously blessed with her outcome and felt called to give back to our community. We want to be able to help families and kids that are fighting childhood cancer. We have teamed up with ACCOIN (American Childhood Cancer Organization Inland Northwest) and are excited to be a part of the amazing work they have been doing for childhood cancer fighters and their families for many years.
