This week the FTC essentially banned non-compete agreements and the department of labor raised the minimum exemption rate. These 2 changes represent some of the biggest pro worker changes that have happened in the last decade.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) voted 3-2 on Tuesday to ban noncompete agreements that prevent tens of millions of employees from working for competitors or starting a competing business after t…

After an eventful holiday season it seemed important to let all of my supporters and friends know that I have officially withdrawn from the Springfield Ward 6 City Council race. As a Marine, coach, and manager I have spent my adult life preaching the “we over me” mantra. The idea of team and the values it reveals often mean that we must step aside to ensure success. As a member of Ward 6 most of my life I feel that this ward is my team and family and my exit from this race will not change that.

I plan to take a more active role in the group Illinois Veterans for Change which is a comittee committed to supporting Democratic Veteran candidates. As a recent veteran candidate it is truly an honor to help this group and I look forward to all of you coming to one of my fundraisers this year to learn more about the group.

Lastly, I will end by saying this is not the end. Every year I listen to the iconic speech of Jimmy Valvano and his motto “Don’t give up, never give up”. It rings as true today as it ever did. I will continue to coach, mentor, and volunteer because that makes this ward better as well. The time I spend every day with my kids and players is a model that they will see and emulate to ensure plenty more generations of success in our capital city.

Today is a solemn day for the campaign but I wanted to take just a few moments to share some thoughts.

First, I would like to congratulate my competitor on his victory. Although he and I do not always agree on the policies, our government is predicated on the humility and humbleness that comes with loss. As a coach and father I hope that all adults find ways to lose with grace and understand that we are always the example that our children see. This Sunday I will say an extra prayer for serenity and leadership for all the newly elected as well as retained leaders in the election cycle.

Second, I would like to take a moment to thank all the family and friends that have helped me over the last 8 or so months. As a coach I always tell my players that value in winning comes from the idea that you could fail. Taking on this challenge may have ultimately ended in a loss but it was filled with so many worthwhile moments. Last night just before the polls were closing someone called the hotline and requested a ride to the polls. Colleen and I were done canvassing and decided we would give the ride. After we dropped them off back home, as we pulled away Colleen looked over and said “that is what you fought for, that is the American Dream”. Helping our neighbors so that they may execute one of their rights is a fundamental building block of the American character and I am happy that my children and the kids I coach get to see that.

This is not the end. Long before this endeavor, I was a coach and volunteer and that will not ever change. My love for this community started when I was very young and everyday I drive by reminders of a city and county that have made me the man that I have become with the good, bad and everything in between. After high school I left to become a Marine and then used my GI bill to become the first college graduate in my family. This is a credit to all the teachers, counselors, and friends in this community that refused to let me fail.

My final thought is this; I may have lost but this community won. Yesterday, I took my daughter to the polls and she watched me vote for Nikki Budzinski For Congress. It became clear that the time Madeline spent with Nikki has encouraged her to be a leader and strong young woman in a way I could never have imagined. Watching Maddie find a hero in all of this is as rewarding as winning.

Philippians 2:3

Dear Father,

I pray for all leaders of Your people.
I pray that they will not lead selfishly, for personal ambition or vain conceit.
I pray that You help leaders to realize
that leading is really a task that requires them to serve.
So, Father, raise up servant leaders, in Jesus’ name.

Help them to work in humility.
Make them selfless vessel of You, in Your image.
Remove any selfish desires. Amen.
