The Illinois House floor yesterday belonged to Peoria.

Manual Rams — 2025-2026 IHSA Class 2A State Champions, Coach Marvin Jordan and this team carried our city.

Christ Lutheran Comets — 37 wins, state title, third in the nation. Peoria basketball runs deep.

Dr. Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat — 2025 Illinois Superintendent of the Year — as she prepares to retire after 11 years.

Days like this remind me exactly who I serve and why.
Peoria, I love you. 💙

And the cherry on top? My beloved Fighting Illini are in the building too — fresh off a Final Four run.

Last Friday, we welcomed the Peoria community to the newly rebuilt Station 16 on North Moore Road. 🚒

This $5+ million investment, secured through the Rebuild Illinois Capital Plan, is a long-overdue commitment to the men and women who run toward danger when the rest of us run from it.

When the President of the State’s Attorneys Association stands with grassroots advocates to support Clean Slate—- that tells you something.

The Clean Slate Act isn’t a choice between safety and second chances. It’s how we get both. Watch who showed up to back this law — prosecutors, police, and the families who’ve lived it. This is what serious justice reform looks like in Illinois. We are bringing untapped talent back into the workforce!

Eleven years ago, I we DJ to gun violence. Out of that loss came a promise — that no other family would have to navigate the aftermath of violent crime alone and in fear.

In 2015, I passed DJ’s Law in Illinois to make good on that promise. It strengthens protections and resources for victims of violent crime and the people who love them.

If something has happened to you or someone in your family — please come forward. I know how heavy that step feels. I know the fear of retaliation, the fear of not being believed, the fear of reliving it all. But you do not have to carry this alone, and you do not have to live looking over your shoulder.

There is support to help you move from surviving to living again. We now have multiple trauma recovery centers that provide therapy people will witnessed crime and witness protection for those who want to come board, but also want to move away to feel safe. There are people whose entire purpose is to walk you through the reporting, through the courts, through the healing. You are not a case number. You are not forgotten.

DJ’s name is on this law. His memory is in this work. And every person who finds the courage to come forward honors what we built in his name.

You are not alone. 💙
