Hello June! There are places that preserve history, and then there are places where history still speaks.

Join us Saturday, June 6 from 1–3 PM for Open House Tours at The Gammon House and learn about the important contributions of individuals like Dr. Charles H. Burton — Springfield’s first Black physician. He was a historian, and author of the 1925 pamphlet History of the Underground Railroad, American Mysteries, and Daughters of Jerusalem.

Dr. Burton documented valuable stories and connections surrounding the Underground Railroad in Springfield, including information connected to George and Sarah Gammon’s daughter Cornelia and the Daughters of Jerusalem organization. His pamphlet remains an important historical resource helping preserve local Black history and freedom stories for future generations.

June is a meaningful time to visit The Gammon House. As we honor Juneteenth and reflect on freedom, resistance, faith, and community, we invite you to experience this history firsthand.

Open to all. This is not just Black history — this is American history.

Continue the experience throughout June:
June 13 – George & Sarah Gammon Discovery Walk
June 19 – Together We Rise Prayer Breakfast featuring Barry C. Black, U.S. Senate Chaplain
June 20 – Annual Juneteenth Fatherfest
