Aquaponics on a large scale!

Aquaponics on a large scale!

In the lush paddy fields of Indonesia, where the lifeblood of rice demands vast quantities of water, farmers have ingeniously turned this necessity into a thriving ecosystem. They didn't just cultivate rice; they cultivated fish too.

Imagine this: fish darting through the fields, not as accidental visitors but as deliberate residents. Farmers introduced them in large numbers, releasing them into the water where rice plants sway in the breeze. It wasn't just a symbiotic relationship; it was a game-changer.

emerged as a brilliant solution. Here's how it worked: first, the fish became natural pest controllers, gobbling up insects, algae, and pests that would otherwise ravage the rice crop. As they fed, they inadvertently pruned the plants, promoting healthier growth.

But that's not all. Their waste, rich in nutrients, became a natural fertilizer, enriching the soil without the need for synthetic additives. And as the fish thrived, so did the farmers, who could harvest them for food or profit.

The result? Land productivity soared by a staggering 20%, surpassing conventional limits. Fields teemed not just with rice but also with bountiful fish stocks, a testament to human ingenuity blending with nature's cycles.

Hi Springfield Eats! This is Carey with the Enos Park Neighborhood Gardens. We are located at 1022 N. 5th in Springfield, and are currently in our 12th season. Last year our garden saw over 2000 total visitor and volunteer engagements, and donated over 1200 pounds of food to our community!

Our harvests go first to the volunteers who work in the garden. We also donate to Kumler Outreach Ministries Food Pantry once a week as well as to Intricate Minds for their Warm Meal Wednesdays. We also host a free farmers market on site every Saturday from 10-11 a.m.

I grew up with food insecurity for most of my childhood and currently live in the Enos Park Neighborhood (51% poverty rate) where the majority of poor people get their food from the dollar store. I am heavily invested in making my neighborhood and community a better place to live, especially for those in poverty.

We offer three volunteer opportunities at the garden each week (rain cancels) on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 9-11. We have a 1000 square foot communal garden where we all work together to raise food for our community. We also have on site a variety of fruits, as well as a prairie.

We will soon begin peak harvesting season, and definitely could use more hands in our communal garden. We are also still replanting after harvesting or clearing out our spring plants. The more hands we have, the more food we can raise!

We are 100% LGTBQ+ affirming! We welcome neurodiverse folks as well. We are working on our accessibility, but our uneven grounds are not the easiest for those with physical disabilities. (We plan to open our wheelchair accessible garden in spring 2025!) Everyone is welcome. We try to match ability and interest to the tasks at hand.

Feel free to follow us on facebook, www.facebook.com/enosparkneighborhoodgarden for the latest updates!

Thanks!
Carey

PROJECT BREAD - Massachusetts

What are we trying to achieve?
Our goal is to end hunger for all 6.9 million Massachusetts residents. Our aim is not just to provide short-term relief but to fundamentally transform the landscape, eradicating hunger through policy change, community engagement, and collective action.

We envision a future where every resident has equitable access to nutritious food, laying the foundation for a healthier, more prosperous Commonwealth.

Project Bread is the backbone of a groundbreaking initiative called MAKE HUNGER HISTORY.

Make Hunger History is an ambitious statewide initiative to end hunger in the Commonwealth. We're crafting a comprehensive plan to eradicate hunger for good and mobilizing a powerful movement to drive change.
Our aim is not just to provide short-term relief but to fundamentally transform the landscape, eradicating hunger through policy change, community engagement, and collective action.

Food insecurity is not about getting free food to people. It’s about eliminating poverty, it’s about a living wage, affordable housing and transportation so people are self-sufficient.

Policymakers must reimagine the United States’ long-term approach to food production and distribution to build an equitable and sustainable system that works for all.
