Have Violin Will Travel, The Louis Persinger Story

Both Susan Dana and Louis Persinger loved music. Louis expressed his talents through the violin. Susan expressed her love of the arts, in part, by including spaces for musical performances in her Frank Lloyd Wright designed home.

Have Violin, Will Travel-The Louis Persinger Story offers a journey with Raymond and Pam Bruzan as they explore the places and people who contributed to the life of violin virtuoso Louis Humphrey Persinger. Born in the Central Illinois village of Rochester in 1887, Louis became the pride of his hometown as his international fame soared even before he graduated from Germanyโ€™s Leipzig Conservatory of Music.

In 1860, Elizabeth Packard was a woman in danger. Her husband of twenty-one years was increasingly threatened by her independence and refusal to keep her thoughts to herself. Finally, he committed the mother of their six children to the Illinois State Hospital in Jacksonville, Illinois. There, Elizabeth learned that she was not the only woman who had been committed to be kept silent.

in 1865, Illinois became the first state in the Union to ratify the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. This Amendment abolished slavery and involuntary servitude in the United States, except as a punishment for convicted crimes.

Illinois's ratification came the day after Congress approved the Amendment, so President Lincoln's home state would be the first to ratify. Lincoln was informed of the ratification by telegram at 7:30 p.m. At a speech that night, Lincoln said that much work lay ahead for the rest of the states to ratify, but he was proud that Illinois was "a little ahead."

Hi. I wanted to share this excellent essay by architecture critic Blair Kamin about Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic Unity Temple in Oak Park and the latest challenge it faces. Of interest (and concern!) to all Wrightophiles, I'd think! I hope you'll help raise awareness and spread the word!
