On Saturday, Sonya Massey's son, Malachi Hill-Massey will graduate from Southeast High School.

Despite losing his mother, Malachi set a strict goal to reach the finish line.

Southeast High School Principal, Cody Trigg, said offering support started with Superintendent Jennifer Gill reaching out to offer any resources the school needed to support Malachi.

Trigg said they sat down with Malachi and asked him what type of support he needed.

Trigg said as a 17 or 18- year-old kid, it was difficult to answer that question, so they looked into assistance from social workers.

Despite losing his mother, Trigg said Malachi made it his mission to walk across the graduation stage.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the young man that went through that,” Trigg said. “Still found a way to advocate for himself on top of now becoming an advocate for things nationally. I’m extremely proud.”

Due to a few Southeast students dying in the past, Trigg said the district has a protocol in place to help students dealing with grief.

Principal Trigg said he’s excited to see what the future holds for Malachi.

June 1 kicked off Month. As a commission founded to advocate on behalf of two men who were harmed or killed by first responders called to help them during their mental health crisis, we recognize the importance of talking about mental health, especially among men who are often expected to be "strong and silent". Let's break down those unhealthy stereotypes and create a society where men have space and opportunity to be supported in the health expression of ALL their emotions!
