FVSU FALL SPORTS SUSPENDED

Greetings Wildcats,

I pray that each and every one of you and your family are safe during this pandemic as we continue to see increased spikes in the southern region of the country. The increased spread of the coronavirus that will very likely continue into the fall season has prompted the suspension of all fall sports, which includes football, at our alma mater and the SIAC conference. The decision to suspend these fall sports teams was made on a thoughtful and difficult process to protect the health and well-being of our student-athletes. I applaud the decision-making by our athletic director, Dr. Anthony Holloman and the leadership of the SIAC to assess the status of each membership institution to play the games that we, as alumni and fans, come to cheer and enjoy. With that being said, we will be refunding any monies to the Hampton University football game road trip that was scheduled for October 3rd. Our Treasurer, Ms. Joscelyn Ward, will be mailing out refund checks to those people. I want to thank you for supporting this trip to cheer on our Wildcats.

Dr. Holloman stated in his letter, "...we will honor all athletic aid awarded to our student-athletes". This will make our efforts to support our students and student-athletes that much more imperative. I am always thankful and appreciative of our alumni in this chapter that have taking on the support of our students in various ways. Through your constant generosity, our alumni chapter recently donated $1,000 to the football program and individually continue to donate to our students. I encourage our alumni, in anyway possible, to continue to financially support the university. We, as a chapter, will find ways to support the university as well, as we fight through this pandemic. Our students are not just the stakeholders of our alma mater, but they are our future. They will be the ones that will continue to keep the "Light in the Valley" burning bright.

I understand these are difficult times and there are many of our alumni that are in need. We must never forget them. Those that are suffering by this disease, let us not turn a blind eye to our Wildcat family members, whether we know them personally or not. We must be diligent and compassionate as we preserve the legacy that is THE Fort Valley State University!

Stay Safe and Stay Strong,
Robert Walker, Jr.
President

Morehouse College Cancels Fall Sports - Morehouse College Athletics

Morehouse College has canceled its fall sports due to the coronavirus pandemic. Morehouse fields two fall sports teams, football and cross country. Dr. Thomas said that the school will honor all athletics scholarships for athletes impacted by the decision. “I know this news will be most disappointing to our scholar-athletes, especially our seniors,” Thomas wrote. “I can only ask for your understanding and respect for the fact that the College is prioritizing your health and safety ahead of all else.”

LIFT EVERY VOICE...

In honor and celebration of Juneteenth, we, the descendants of our ancestors who was brought to this country in 1619, take this moment in reflection of our history. A history on this day that saw the end of slavery on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas, 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was pronounced. On this day, let us renew, restore and reeducate ourselves to make a more truer union.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. The celebration of June 19th was coined "Juneteenth" and grew with more participation from descendants. The Juneteenth celebration was a time for reassuring each other, for praying and for gathering remaining family members. We RECOGNIZE our history and CELEBRATE our future!

In the spirit of the fight for freedom and voting empowerment, The Fannie Lou Hammer Story (FLHS) will be coming soon to virtual screens around the world. The critically acclaimed, award winning, one-woman play directed by Byron C. Saunders, written and performed by accomplished vocalist, Mzuri Moyo Aimbaye, is a powerful and uplifting biopic of Fannie Lou Hamer’s rise from Jim Crow’s Mississippi all the way to the halls of Congress leading the Voting Rights Movement in 1964.

The FLHS, re-imagined as a live online event in Celebration of Juneteenth, will debut on Facebook Live and Instagram Live on June 19, 2020 at 8pm from the historic Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center in Sanford, Florida. Sanford is the home of the Trayvon Martin tragedy, one of the many symbols of social injustice.
