Big news! Jeanne McQueen, fifth-grade teacher at Glenridge Elementary School, has been named a St. Louis Regional Teacher of the Year Honoree.

McQueen is one of 10 educators in the region selected for this recognition. She will be formally celebrated at a banquet in August and will have the opportunity to be considered for Missouri Teacher of the Year.

Teaching the Stories of America 📚🇺🇸

Earlier this year, Captain Elementary School librarian Tom Bober launched the “25 Stories for 250 Years” program to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. For every grade level, Bober selected five nonfiction picture books—one for every 50-year period—and paired each book with primary sources to tell a well-rounded story of America.

More than a themed ­read-aloud, the program helps students connect with American history through engaging stories and expands their understanding of those stories with actual historical documentation.

This fall, the project will continue with 25 new titles and primary source pairings focused on different moments in America’s history. While the new titles are still being selected, you can explore the full list of books students have already read at bit.ly/25StoriesOfAmerica.

There was plenty to celebrate at the Summer Academy Learner Showcase last week!

To wrap up Session 1, families and staff were invited to explore the projects students have been working on. From playground designs to book reviews to "math monsters" and more, these learners deserve a round of applause for all of the progress they've made. 👏
