PlantingScience

PlantingScience Botanical Society of America led science education program bringing scientists, students and teachers together

PlantingScience was launched with a start-up grant from National Science Foundation. The program is of no cost for science teachers. The program supports teachers as one means of tackling our acute need for improved science literacy on a local and national scale. Recognizing that science and innovation are critical in ensuring a prosperous and sustainable future, the BSA developed PlantingScience

as a direct response to a challenge from The National Academies to become leaders in supporting inquiry-based Science, Math, Engineering and Technology Education (STEM). PlantingScience is designed to facilitate three core concepts recognized by the National Research Council to facilitate learning: hands-on, inquiry-based science; peer-to-peer dialog and team learning; mentorship support from topical experts.

Plant ecologist. Not a "botanist", or so Mason Heberling (Carnegie Museum of Natural History) once thought. That changed at his first Botany Conference, where he found a community that welcomed him exactly as he was. Now BSA keeps him connected, inspired, and sure of his place in the field.

So many of us have felt that flicker of doubt, wondering if we really belong under the botany umbrella. But that umbrella is wide. Look no further than the BSA logo: aquatic plants, mosses, conifers, ferns, flowering plants, even fungi.

Botanical scientists of every kind belong here, which is why we can proudly say, . YOUR Journey to claiming that title is OUR Story, an umbrella wide enough for everyone.

This , help us reach our $15,000 Endowment goal and keep building a field where everyone has a place: day-for-bsa.botany.org/2026

Not to make this about us, but if you have quick eyes you can see us in this video. (Jen is wearing her favorite PlantingScience shirt when the BSA staff shouts, "Plant People")

We're very proud to be a member of this community, and part of the effort to keep it strong!

Time for a midday celebration! 🌿

Introducing "Plant People for the Win", a brand-new music video made just for us plant people. Written and recorded by Dr. Chris Martine and Grammy-nominated artist Bill Kelly, with Grammy-winning producer Dean Jones (together, Doc Martine and the Botaneers), it's a joyful anthem for botanical enthusiasts everywhere.

It's packed with fun lyrics, photos and clips of plant lovers around the world, and a whole lot of people joyfully yelling "PLANT PEOPLE!" A love letter to the community we're celebrating all day long.

Take a few minutes, turn it up, and find some joy in the botanical world we share.

Ken Cameron (University of Wisconsin–Madison) didn't start out leading BSA, he started out belonging to it. Over the years, that sense of belonging grew into service, and eventually into the presidency, and now, as Past President, he continues to help shape the Society's future. Through it all, he's found deep meaning in the relationships and shared purpose that make this community what it is.

YOUR Journey doesn't end at belonging, it grows into shaping what comes next through service and advocacy. And BSA supports you at every step, from early-career leadership like the Early Career Advisory Board to committee and board roles later on. That's OUR Story: a botanical society that lifts up its members as they help lead it forward.

This , help us reach our $15,000 Endowment goal to keep supporting our member leaders at every stage.

This Thursday, August 27, is A Day for BSA! 🌱

Behind every quote in this graphic is a member whose path was shaped by this community: first conferences, lifelong networks, and room to grow as scientists and leaders. This is where their journeys meet Our Story: our commitment to support members around the world at every stage of their careers.

A Day for BSA is our annual day of giving in support of the BSA Endowment, the fund that powers the programming our community relies on all year long, from student awards to conference events and beyond. Every gift helps sustain the opportunities that shape our members' journeys, today and for those just beginning.

Your Journey is part of Our Story. Help us keep it growing with a gift to the Endowment to celebrate A Day for BSA. 🌿

In uncertain times, community matters more than ever. Karolina Heyduk (University of Connecticut) points to BSA as the place botanists turn to for student support, for publishing, for coming together, and for advocating for science and sustaining programs like PLANTS.

YOUR Journey in defense of science is OUR Story in action. When botany comes under pressure, BSA is where researchers stand together, advocating for the field and sustaining the programs that carry it forward. Endowment giving is what keeps that work possible, especially now.

This , help us reach our $15,000 Endowment goal to sustain the programs and advocacy our field depends on.

It's A Day for BSA! 🌱

On this day in 1895, the Botanical Society of America held its very first foundational meeting. More than 130 years later, we're celebrating that legacy, and the community it grew into, with our annual day of Endowment giving.

YOUR Journey — OUR Story

This year we are celebrating YOUR Journey with BSA, hearing from members around the world about how BSA has transformed, and continues to support, careers in the botanical sciences. Your journey is part of OUR Story. Help us write the next chapter, for yourself and for every botanical scientist who follows, with a gift today toward our $15,000 goal for the BSA Endowment.
