This week, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office had the honor of welcoming author and leadership expert Simon Sinek to the County of San Mateo.

Through the County’s Leadership Forum, Simon shared powerful insights that inspired not only our Sheriff’s Office team, but also policing and public sector leaders from across the Bay Area.

In the policing profession, we train for emergencies, practice defensive tactics and run real-world scenarios. This preparedness is critical to the work we do, and it helps us save lives.

Equally important is our commitment to developing modern-minded leaders and fostering cultures built on trust, accountability and continuous growth.

Following the Leadership Forum, Simon spent time with the Sheriff's Office team in a smaller session focused on organizational healing.

We’re immensely grateful to Simon for donating his time for both sessions and for his personal investment in shaping the next generation of leaders in public service.

Ready to serve! ⭐️ We’re so proud to introduce our three newest deputies who graduated from South Bay Regional Academy Class #186 today!

Congratulations to Deputy Peter Lecce (who also served as Class President), Deputy Emily O’Donnell and Deputy Karl Reyes on achieving this outstanding milestone.

Not only did they graduate from one of the most rigorous training programs, but they truly excelled. Our deputies took home all of the academy class awards, including:

-Outstanding Academic Achievement Award - Deputy Lecce
-Outstanding Practical Achievement Award - Deputy Reyes
-Top Recruit Award - Deputy Lecce
-Dr. Susan Oliviera Leadership Award - Deputy Lecce
-Deputy O’Donnell also made history at the academy as the first female recruit to score 100% on all final scenarios

They represented the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office at the highest level, and we’re so proud to have the best and brightest serving our communities. Congratulations, deputies!

Every year, Chief Angela Averiett and I have the privilege of spending time with second and third year law students at Stanford Law School to have honest conversations about policing in America.

Together, we talk about leadership, culture, and the difficult realities facing the profession today. Through the work of , we share why culture matters, why trust must be built intentionally, and why leadership in policing must continue to evolve.

We don’t sugarcoat the challenges. The conversations are real, and the questions are thoughtful.

What always stands out is the character and curiosity of the students. Their willingness to wrestle with complex issues gives us hope for the future of leadership and justice.

Moments like this remind us that progress happens when people are willing to step into hard conversations with humility, courage, and a genuine desire to serve.

Honored to keynote at the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center () Vibrancy Connect event, an organization close to my heart and one I was proud to serve as a board member.

We talked about leadership that listens, the power of empathy, and how people don’t follow what we do, they follow why we do it.

Enjoyed sharing about and the importance of creating great culture, inspiring those we lead, and how to effectively communicate change at the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Assoc. conference. Lots of modern minded leaders in the room excited to move our profession forward.

This morning, Simon Sinek and I had the privilege of keynoting the Women Leaders in Law Enforcement (WLLE) conference.

Simon was so inspired by this audience the first time he spoke last year that he came back again today and it’s easy to see why. The energy, courage, and passion in this room are exactly what keeps us motivated at .

To the incredible leaders and aspiring leaders we met: thank you for reminding us why this work matters. You inspire us as much as we hope to inspire you. 💙

At The Curve, our mission is to walk alongside you on your leadership journey, supporting you with ideas, resources, and community as you continue shaping the future of policing with courage and heart.

Every leader creates a ripple.

When done well, that ripple brings calm in chaos. It inspires confidence, steadies the team, and reminds people they’re not alone. You feel it in the way a leader listens, owns mistakes, and shows up with presence.

But when leadership is driven by fear or insecurity, the ripple turns toxic. It creates anxiety, stifles trust, and leaves teams walking on eggshells.

Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about how you show up, especially when the pressure is high.

The question is not if you’re shaping culture.

The question is how.

Grateful to the in British Columbia, Canada for the honor of keynoting their Week. This marked The Curve’s first international speaking event, and likely just the beginning.

We spent time diving into what it means to build vibrant, modern policing cultures. We talked leadership, trust, and what it looks like to truly take care of the people we lead.

Thank you to the dedicated leaders and professionals who showed up with open minds and hearts. Your commitment to evolving the profession, one conversation at a time, is exactly what we need.

For what it’s worth, I’ve interacted with hundreds (maybe thousands) of agencies over the decade I’ve been speaking. Abbotsford PD is one of the top when it comes to an incredible, modern minded, and innovative policing culture. They dedicate one week a year for “Leadership Week” that exposes their staff to awesome topics that are lacking in most places (along with volleyball and other fun activities). They’re one to watch for sure! 👏

We say we want diverse recruits.

We seek out people with life experience, empathy, grit, and a desire to serve.

But on Day One of the academy, we start pushing that out of them with uniformity, stress, and silence.

Yes, there’s a time and place for discipline, standards, and tactical skill. But let’s be honest: we’ve trained generations of officers and deputies how to shoot, drive, and defend. What we haven’t done nearly as well is teach them how to listen, connect, or lead.

If we want to attract and keep the right people in this profession, we need to invest in the human skills that matter most:

🟡 How to have hard conversations
🟡 How to listen with empathy
🟡 How to lead with clarity, not just compliance

It starts in the academy but can’t stop there. The same way we do fi****ms qualifications every year, we should revisit communication, self-awareness, and emotional regulation as we promote people into leadership roles.

Because here’s the truth: the recruits who come in with empathy and heart are not a liability. They are our future. We shouldn’t train it out of them. We should train it up in them.

The job is hard. The toll is real. But making people “tougher” by disconnecting them from others or themselves only leads to burnout, poor decisions, and broken trust.

It is possible to be tactically strong and emotionally intelligent. In fact, the best officers we know are both.

If we want policing to be a profession that protects the vulnerable, we need to train our people to protect each other too.

Not just physically. But psychologically. Culturally. Emotionally.

That’s what builds strong teams. And that’s what earns trust that lasts.

At The Curve, we believe leadership training should grow with you. And that every recruit deserves to be seen, shaped, and supported…not just broken down.

It’s time to train the whole person.
