Legacy Project — Restoring an Icon

Some projects carry more than material history.

BioBlast Services had the privilege of working on the Old North Fork Store, located along Highway 75 north of Ketchum—an enduring piece of Idaho history that became part of American pop culture when it was rebranded as Gracie’s Diner for the 1956 film Bus Stop, starring Marilyn Monroe and Don Murray.

Decades later, the building was relocated to a private residence and underwent a full restoration. As part of that process, BioBlast was brought in to carefully remove exterior coatings and prepare the log structure for its next chapter—work that required respect for both the material and the story it carries.

Projects like this go beyond surface preparation. They’re about preserving character, honoring place, and allowing history to remain visible rather than erased.

Over the years, BioBlast Services has focused on surface preparation where precision matters—choosing methods that respect the material and the setting. Power washing is a natural extension of that approach, offering an effective, bio-safe option for cleaning and renewing exterior surfaces without abrasion.

Some projects stay with you.

Blasting this log home on the East Fork of the Salmon River near Challis was a true career highlight. The scale of the structure, the setting, and the unique character of the logs made it a project to remember—one where precision, access, and method mattered at every step.

Each log had its own story, grain, and history. The work wasn’t about stripping everything down indiscriminately, but about revealing the material while protecting its integrity. Projects like this are a reminder of why alternative blasting methods exist in the first place—and why choosing the right approach is everything.

Years later, that same mindset still guides our work today, whether we’re handling detailed log home restoration or applying newer services like professional power washing for exterior surfaces and hardscapes.

A look back at one of our early projects—and a look at how our work has evolved.

This video documents precision coatings removal on a 1950s Ferrari body, where traditional sandblasting would have risked warping or damaging thin steel and aluminum panels. Even then, the focus was on choosing the right method and using alternative abrasive media to protect the material while achieving clean results.

That same mindset still guides our work today. While our tools and capabilities have expanded—including professional power washing services—the principle remains the same: match the method to the surface.

Introducing BioBlast Services—and What’s NEW!!!

BioBlast Services has been part of the Wood River Valley for a long time, and it felt like the right moment to reintroduce ourselves.

Owner-operator Alan Barr has worked in wood restoration and surface preparation for over 20 years, specializing in projects where traditional sandblasting simply isn’t appropriate. From the beginning, BioBlast was built as an alternative to conventional blasting, using advanced equipment and bio-neutral media to remove coatings, restore surfaces, and create precise surface profiles without unnecessary damage.

Over the years, our experience—combined with continually evolving equipment and methods—has shaped how we approach restoration and cleaning. We focus on choosing the right method for each surface, prioritizing accuracy, material integrity, and minimal environmental impact.

Today, BioBlast Services offers both custom sandblasting and professional pressure washing services, allowing us to handle a broader range of projects—from detailed coatings removal on log and wood homes to routine cleaning and renewal of hardscapes, buildings, and exterior surfaces.

Our work spans wood, metal, brick, stone, concrete and ranges from log homes and commercial buildings to specialty restoration projects and classic vehicles. Each project is evaluated individually to determine the safest and most effective approach.

Our approach to blasting uses specialized media capable of a full range of applications including restoration of vintage cars. Traditional sand blasting methods are far too aggressive and generate enough heat to warp and completely destroy any collectable automobile.
