Custer, Idaho Empire Saloon and Gift Shop Population peaked in 1896 at 600, only to become virtually a ghost town by 1911.

In 1879 Sammy Holman divided his mining claim as lots for the narrow, single main street town that extended a half-mile from the General Custer Mill to Chinatown.

Help Keep Idaho History Alive! Work Campers Needed for 2027 season
Location: Custer Townsite, Idaho (Land of the Yankee Fork)
Dates: 2027 season begins the Monday before Memorial Day and ends the Friday after Labor Day.
Schedule: Flexible! 2 to 5 days per week available
Per Diem: $40 each volunteer day

What We Provide:

Free Campsite: Provided by the USFS
Amenities: Water and sewer hookups included. NO ELECTRIC! (We use generators and solar)
On-Site Facilities: Access to a laundry room, shower house, and restrooms

What You’ll Be Doing:

Visitor Services & History: Greeting visitors, sharing the rich history of the Custer ghost town in beautuful central Idaho, and spending time providing a historical experience for visitors in the historic museum/schoolhouse or gift shop.
Daily Operations: gift shop and museum operations, having visitors sign a guest book, asking for donations, Stocking the gift shop, light cleaning (sweeping, restrooms, trash removal), and light lifting as needed.
Maintenance Projects (Optional): If you are handy with a paintbrush or basic tools, we have light maintenance and painting projects available!
Who We’re Looking For:
Enthusiastic, reliable individuals or couples who enjoy engaging with the public, appreciate local history, and love the outdoors.
