Standing in front of his fellow graduates, David Ramirez told them, “I’m proud as hell today.”
But he hasn’t always been.
A lifelong addiction to alcohol hindered his education and eventually landed him serving time in the Northern Nevada Correctional Center. While trying to help his 12-year-old son with his math homework over the phone, Ramirez came to a realization.
“That’s when it hit me,” he recalled. “I owed it to my son to become a more competent and reliable father. “
He came one step closer to that goal Thursday, June 6, 2024, when he joined 191 graduates at NNCC receiving their diplomas through Carson Adult Education.
“This is why I do education,” said Bob Chambers, principal of the Carson Adult High School. “To help people actively improve upon and progress in their lives. Everyone in this room is starkly aware of loss and what can be taken from you. This education, this degree can never be taken away. It is yours forever.”
Graduate Mark Smith, Jr., reminded graduates, “It’s not about how fast you go, it’s about how right you go.”

Opening new doors of opportunity!

Western Nevada College has partnered with NDOC and Campagni Auto Group to introduce an innovative Auto 101 program for incarcerated students at Northern Nevada Correctional Center. This collaboration aims to equip these individuals with Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications, providing them with opportunities to join the automotive industry upon release.

The first group of students incarcerated at Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City stepped into the prison's auto bay Monday, Aug. 28, for their first day of Auto 101, Introduction to General Mechanics offered by Western Nevada College.

🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 Our very own Robyn Feese, MA, LCADC, CPC, NCC, Director of the Substance Abuse Program at the Nevada Department of Corrections, has been making waves in the field of addiction and rehabilitation!

Robyn recently presented at the National Conference for the Bureau of Justice Administration in August (Cossup), showcasing her expertise in implementing evidence-based principles for corrections programs. With 17 years of experience in addiction, behavioral health, and corrections, her contributions have earned her national recognition.

She oversees five substance use disorder programs across Nevada and formerly served as the substance abuse lead counselor at the Wells Center within the Illinois Department of Corrections. As an adjunct professor in Illinois, Robyn's dedication to this vital field is truly inspiring. She holds multiple state and national licenses and a Master of Arts degree in human development counseling.

Stay tuned as Robyn continues to share her knowledge and expertise! She will be presenting at a local UNR-Cooperative Extension event and another National Conference (AJFO) at the end of this month.
