In the waters of Australia, wild bottlenose dolphins have been documented doing something truly remarkable — bringing wild-caught fish and squid to humans.
At Tangalooma, Queensland, researchers recorded **23 instances of this rare behaviour between 1998 and 2011**, where dolphins approached people involved in the regulated dolphin program carrying prey and appeared to offer it to them.
Researchers described the behaviour as **“gift giving”**, while noting that its exact meaning remains uncertain. It may involve food sharing, play, teaching, or simply reflect the unique relationship these dolphins developed with the humans around them.
