Dear Roller Families,
During last night’s Legislative School Board Meeting, the school board approved the recommendation from administration to update our current Health and Safety plan to reflect the most recent changes from the CDC. The recommendation from the administration was determined by reviewing this most recent guidance. Please read this email thoroughly for important information.
MASKING
Masks will no longer be required in the District’s school buildings, beginning March 28, 2022. Although masking will still be encouraged, it will not be mandatory for students, staff, or visitors to wear masks in our buildings. Individuals are no longer required to be masked on SHSD district transportation.
CLOSE CONTACTS WITH POSITIVE CASES
Individuals who are in close contact with a positive case and are not experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 will not be excluded from school or school activities, regardless of vaccination status.
Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 or are in close contact with a positive case and are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 will be required to isolate or quarantine as required under
Commonwealth and CDC directives and per the direction of their health care provider.
We will not be tracking close contacts or requiring quarantine for potential exposures occurring within our school buildings or at our programs. We will continue to track overall positive cases in each building and that data will remain available on the District’s website.
CONTINUED MONITORING
The District will continue to regularly monitor COVID-19 transmission data and related guidance and directives. As local/county transmission level and guidance from the CDC and PDE change, the District administration may recommend that the school board make updates to our protocols as they become appropriate.
It is possible that the Health and Safety Plan may be revised in the future as circumstances in a building, classroom or district change or when the legal requirements regarding masking require a different approach.
MASK SURVEY DATA
The district collected data through a survey that was sent to our school community of parent/guardians, SHSD staff, and SHSD school board members. This survey was sent to 1048 people and the survey was taken by 251 people. Review of this data helped administration develop a timeline for when the mask optional shift would take place. Here are the results of the survey sent out.
Thank you for your continued support and please continue to reach out to us with any questions or concerns.
Mick Iskric, Jr.
Superintendent

Safety Tips: Walking To and From School
02/03/2022
Dear Roller Families. The Steelton-Highspire School District will be operating virtually tomorrow, Friday, February 4, 2022. This is due to the impending wintry mix precipitation that is expected to bring icy conditions throughout the morning hours. With the option that the district has to operate virtually, we decided this is the best decision in the interest of safety. Thanks for understanding.

We are aware that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has entered an order vacating the Secretary of Health’s mandatory masking rule which was applied to all Pennsylvania schools by the Department of Education. The Supreme Court’s Order does not change a school district’s ability to require masks based its own determination.
In order to keep our schools open, the Steelton-Highspire School Board voted on August 11, 2021, to require masking in schools and that requirement was incorporated into the District’s Health and Safety Plan.
Here is what families need to know for Monday: The Steelton-Highspire School District has reviewed our Health and Safety plan and will continue to require masks for all students, staff, and visitors in SHSD buildings. We want to continue to ensure we are doing everything we can in relation to the health and safety of everyone that enters our facilities. The Health and Safety Plan will continue to be reviewed in accordance with CDC guidelines and recommendations. Please review our plan on the district website at: https://tinyurl.com/3uw7z3n7
Here is what the Supreme Court’s order also does not affect: 1) the wearing of face masks on transportation, that continue to be required by a federal order from the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC); and 2) the PDE quarantine requirements, which continue in place for now.
There has been no determination by the PIAA as to how it will address masking during interscholastic competition.
COVID and keeping schools open remain critical issues to families. We expect that there will be additional changes to PDE’s guidance, which may change how the District will be required to respond.
Please note that in an effort to help curb the spread of Covid-19, SHSD will be holding a vaccination clinic on February 11, 2022, from 1pm-4pm. Please consider taking advantage of this opportunity and check out our website for further information. https://www.shsd.k12.pa.us/Page/1592 Please see attached consent forms that can be completed.
Please remember that when coming to school, all students, staff, and visitors are required to wear a mask when indoors and social distance (3 feet) to the best extent possible. If your student is deemed to habitually come to school without a mask, they may be required to shift to remote learning which is the Roller Cyber Academy offered through Caola. Another reminder is to please self-screen at home, checking temperatures daily and review our Covid-19 self-checker widget on the school district website at https://www.shsd.k12.pa.us/Page/1592 . Doing these two simple things will help to ensure we are limiting the spread of Covid-19 and allowing us to operate as close to normal as possible. We will also continue to offer testing for symptomatic students and staff. Please communicate with the school nurse 717-704-3800 x3814 if you need to take advantage of this opportunity.
Please contact the school with any questions and concerns. The District remains committed to exploring all options to order keep students in school and learning in person. We appreciate your support as we continue to work to collaboratively keep students in schools. We are here to help you as needed.

Greetings families of Jr/Hs Rollers! I’m Miss Feldser, the district librarian. Some of you may have gotten an email from me recently about missing library books. I apologize it has taken me so long to reach out and try to recollect them. As you can imagine, we lost several hundred books between the two libraries in the past months. I know it's a long shot, but I wanted to reach out and try anyway! Please know that I have checked the library shelves already for these titles. If your student has a book with a barcode for either of our libraries, please have them return it. In the Jr/Hs library, there is a bin next to the copier. In the elementary library, items can be dropped off anytime.
If you have any questions, need to pay for or replace a lost book, please contact me @ [email protected]
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in helping bringing books back to the school libraries.
Miss Feldser

Good evening Steelton - Highspire Jr./Sr High School Families,
On behalf of Ms.Young and myself we wanted to reach out to you all and ask that if you have a student in the high school with you this evening take some time to express how proud of them you are ! What could of been a very tough day for our students was probably one of the most empowering days for any educator to be a part of.
Our students truly came together assuring each other that we are all safe here in Roller Country. They followed expectations of moving and remaining in class and supporting each other to do so. Our upperclassman consistently checked in on our younger students and made sure to support their teachers in clearing hallways. Even more importantly, our Local Police Departments were a presence and peace to our building and engaged in great conversation with students and staff around the importance of all of our safety!
Roller Family ….Be Proud… Be Excited… greatness is brewing here at Steelton-Highspire Jr./Sr. High School! We look forward to working with you all and embracing this wonderful day to grow our students to be the amazing leaders they are destined to be!
Remember …. “One Team … One Dream!”
