Townhouse Fire for Crew 2

On Monday, about 30 minutes into SVFC's monthly membership meeting, Engine 618, Engine and Truck 611, Engine and Tiller 606 and Engine 622 from Ashburn Volunteer Fire Rescue Department - AVFRD, Battalion Chief 601, Safety 601, and EMS Supervisor from Loudoun County Fire and Rescue, and Medic 615 and Rescue 635 from Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad were alerted for a townhouse fire a few blocks away. Before all units marked responding Truck 611 was already on scene. With fire showing to the rear of the townhouse a RIT Level 1 dispatch was started bringing additional units from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, Engine 439, Medic 404, and Tower 401. Chief 600, Chief 611, Assistant Chief 618, and Canteen 611 added on to the call. Truck 611 began to search the home to locate the fire and ensure that all occupants were out. Engines 611 and 618 pulled hoselines to begin extinguishing the fire. As other units arrived they assumed other duties including assisting with extinguishment and checking neighboring homes to ensure fire hadn't spread. Within 15 minutes the fire was extinguished and units changed focus to smoke removal and other damage mitigation tasks.

Our Crew from R615 was dispatched on this fire last night on the Level 1 RIT. Please if you can help this family in need, and do what you can especially this close to Christmas!

"Neighbors Helping Neighbors" is our motto, and it is clearly a value shared by others in our community. A neighbor has established a GoFundMe for the family affected by last night's fire - if you wish to donate, please visit https://www.gofundme.com/birdsnest-place-house-fire-fund.

We also want to thank another neighbor on Birdsnest Place who opened their garage to our crews for medical rehab - having a warm, dry place where our medical crews can evaluate the health of our firefighters after working in the burning structure makes their hard job just a little better.

Every day state police trainees, troopers, special agents and officers from other agencies train at the 600-acre Driver Training Complex in Blackstone, working on multiple firearms ranges, a high-speed driving track and in countless other training scenarios. In the past if an emergency occurred, the closest ambulance could be up to 40 minutes away. Now, it’s in the parking lot.

It’s thanks to an introduction by LifeCare Medical Transports CEO Kevin Dillard that Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad became aware of the need and benefit of having an ambulance on campus at the Blackstone training complex. This week they visited Virginia State Police Headquarters in Richmond to generously donate of one of the agency’s recently retired ambulances, gifting Virginia State Police its own medical support vehicle.

Special Agent Adam Galton, Coordinator of the Virginia State Police Operational Medical Support Unit, said the soon-to-be fully outfitted ambulance will be used by state police troopers and agents, who are certified EMTs and paramedics, to provide immediate care until responding paramedics arrive. While it won’t be used as a transport vehicle, it will serve as a resource for rehabilitation and resuscitation support if an emergency were to occur at the Blackstone training facility.

“This is more than just an ambulance,” Galton said. “It’s synergistic.”

Galton explained that there is no longer room in today’s public safety environment for there to be an “us versus them” among law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services agencies. He said all branches of public safety must work together to support each other and the citizens of Virginia.

Assistant Chief Robin Davis with Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad echoed the sentiment, noting emergency medical response is no longer exclusively handled by rescue squads. A 30-year veteran of public safety and former law enforcement officer, Davis said he is glad to have witnessed the public safety industry evolve to the point that medical training has been incorporated by so many agencies.

“This ambulance has seen 109,000 miles and saved countless lives,” Davis said, “So I’m glad to know it will continue its public service supporting a very special community of law enforcement.”

It's football season not only for the NFL, but also for the High Schools. SVRS has either an Ambulance or a Medic unit staffed for each home game at all Potomac Falls, Dominion, and Park View High Schools. This past Friday night it was Crew 7 turn to staff a unit for one of the schools. To which we staffed an Ambulance for the Park View High School home game in a addition to our 3 transport units, Duty Officer, and the heavy Rescue. #SVRS, #ParkViewHighSchool
