When we or**sm, we tend to relax the mouth, jaw and lean our head back. ⬅️ this can be directly applied to birth. The relaxed jaw impacts the pelvic floor, cervix and tissues. This is how we can more easily surrender to the birth and baby. Allowing the uterus to powerfully contract and being available for the baby to just move through us.

Yes, babies practice breathing before they’re born. 🤯

This baby was born en caul during a cesarean, still enclosed in the amniotic sac.

Watch closely at the nose.

What you’re seeing are fetal breathing movements. Before birth, babies aren’t breathing oxygen through their lungs. Their oxygen is supplied through the placenta and umbilical cord, while their lungs remain fluid-filled.

But babies rehearse the movements they’ll need after birth.

Their diaphragm and chest make rhythmic breathing movements, and fluid can move through their airways.

These movements are an important part of lung development and preparation for life outside the womb.

Then birth happens, the placenta continues oxygenating baby during the transition, fluid begins clearing from the lungs, and those practice movements become something entirely new.

They become the first breaths of air. 🫁✨

I often consider that babies are very smart in the ways they emerge from our bodies. The baby may intuitively move their arm over their chest, up and around in order to accommodate the space available to them in the pelvis and pelvic floor in order to keep proceeding forward. Once they reach the perineum a position change may be needed or more hands-on support to release these arms.

I think if we show up knowing our baby’s are smart, we can show up with more fluidity in our approach.

When you only attend or see heavily intervened births, you lose sight of what normal variations look like.

In an undisturbed birth, we can witness the baby’s shoulders doing a back and forth rocking motion at the perineum.

This is a variation of normal that is rarely seen in hands-on births.

The lack of exposure to this shoulder rocking can cause a provider to unnecessarily intervene on a healthy birth.

Your ni**le isn’t a straw.

When milk lets down, it doesn’t come out of one single hole in the center of the ni**le.

The ni**le has multiple milk duct openings, and milk can flow from several of them at the same time, which is exactly what you’re seeing in this video.

Inside the breast, milk is produced in tiny structures called alveoli. When baby suckles, hormones, especially oxytocin, trigger the milk ejection reflex, moving milk through a branching system of ducts toward the ni**le.

You may see several tiny streams spraying in completely different directions.

You also don’t necessarily see milk coming from every duct opening at once. Which openings are actively flowing can vary during a feeding or pumping session.

The human breast isn’t a bottle with one opening.

It’s an entire milk-making and milk-delivery system.

Bodies are fu***ng cool.

YES. THIS BABY IS BEING BORN FACE FIRST.

This is called a face presentation, a rare presentation where the baby’s head is extended backward and the face presents first instead of the crown of the head.

And yes, in certain circumstances, a baby in a face presentation can be born vaginally.

The key is the position of the chin, called the mentum.

When the chin rotates anteriorly, toward the birthing person’s front, there may be enough room and the right mechanics for the baby to descend and be born vaginally.

Face-presenting babies can also be born looking pretty swollen or bruised. That appearance can be startling, but much of that facial swelling and molding can resolve after birth.

Birth has more variations than most people will ever get the chance to see.

And THIS is one of them.
