Happy World Oceans Day! Oceans are Earth’s
lifeline, producing over 50% of Earth’s oxygen
and storing 50 times more carbon than our
atmosphere. The ocean and its coastlines
represent ~61% of the world’s GDP.

Beaches cover a third of the world’s coastline,
connecting us to the ocean. Beach communities
rely on ocean health every day to keep their
economies thriving.

Protecting our beaches is essential to
conserving our ocean ecosystems. Keeping our
beaches litter-free, limiting the stormwater
runoff entering waterways, and utilizing nature
for storm protection are just three of many
direct impacts we can have on our oceans when
we protect our shores!

A beautiful day provided the perfect backdrop for the grand opening of Stone Harbor’s new 97th Street Playground!

Members of the community joined Mayor Tim Carney, Borough Council members, Stone Harbor’s Recreation Advisory Committee, Cape May County Commissioner Bobby Barr, and State Assemblyman Antwan McClellan to celebrate the official ribbon cutting of this exciting new community amenity.

The new playground offers a fun, safe, and welcoming space for children and families to gather, play, and create lasting memories for years to come. We extend our sincere thanks to everyone whose hard work, support, and partnership helped bring this project to life.

Be sure to stop by, explore the new playground, and enjoy all it has to offer. See you at 97th Street!

We wanted to take time this World Environment Day to highlight the often-overlooked ecological importance of beach and dune ecosystems, not only for our own benefit, but for the life around us! Beach and dune systems support...
- Carbon Sequestration: Sand and dune grass roots naturally trap and bury carbon
- Nesting sites: For shorebirds, turtles, & other endangered or endemic species
- Habitat for Small Invertebrates: Sand crabs, clams, beetles, & even microscopic invertebrates live in the sand beneath our feet, depositing nutrients into the ecosystem and fueling other animals
- Natural Water Filtration: Sand, roots, and microorganisms filter water, break down pollutants, and reduce bacteria levels to improve water quality
- The connection between land and sea: intertidal zones connect nutrient transfer, support species who need both land and sea, & provide humans with access to the ocean!

We’re asking you all summer long to say
... but what does that really
mean?

Saying tells legislators that our
beaches are important and deserve funding.

The American Coastal Coalition is not only
rallying the troops, we are giving you a way to
act! Here is your guide to the actions and
