Weekly Policy Drop: Electoral Reform 🗳️

Even if we overturn Citizens United, we still won’t have equitable elections. Wealthy individuals have an easier path to victory in elections than working class people, and that’s exactly why only 2% of Congress is working class. We need public funding of elections, matching programs, and a cap on election spending if we want to take money out of the conversation and center policy and experience instead.

These policies are not just abstract to me. I have experience serving on the Election Law Committee during my first term as a State Representative and a record of sponsoring bills that support election integrity. Our campaign is not funded by lobbyists, super PACs, or corporate PACs, and we’re one of two candidates in New Hampshire’s First Congressional District with a majority of in-state donations.

Happy Mother’s Day to my incredible mom. When I broke my back in a skiing accident in high school, she used every single one of her sick days to be by my side in the hospital. I can’t imagine what it would have been like spending a month in the hospital alone as a 15 year old. She’s a testament to all of the amazing moms out there who put their families first yet never get enough credit. To all of the moms reading this, you are good enough 💕

I’d also like to shoutout the amazing moms I’m running against in New Hampshire’s First Congressional District who are balancing taking care of their kids and running for office. Hats off to you all ❤️

Have you ever wondered why overwhelmingly popular pieces of legislation like cannabis legalization and Defend the Guard never pass in New Hampshire?

I’m going to let you in on a little secret: the Senate is protecting Governor Ayotte 🤫☕️

It’s all about getting reelected. It’s all about what the donors want. It’s never about what’s best for Granite Staters.

In 2021 I was invited to travel to Washington DC with to talk to members of Congress about voter suppression laws targeting students in New Hampshire. I got to meet and another Senator… (jump scare on last slide) to ask that they pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. It’s hard to believe this was five years ago. Now Jim Crow voter suppression measures are back in full force following the Supreme Court’s decision to weaken the Voting Rights Act. John Lewis is rolling in his grave.

Here’s what we can do about it:

1) Pass proportional representation- eliminates the ability to gerrymander.

2) Uncap the House- makes representatives more accessible and allows their voters to hold them to account.

3) Pass Ranked Choice Voting- I’ve co-sponsored this in the NH House. Let’s get some options on the ballot besides Democrats and Republicans.

Some good news (finally) for renters in the state. The Senate just tabled HB 1336 which would add an additional deposit for renters with low credit scores.

While this legislation was branded as “an innovative approach that could help provide housing to people whose circumstances on paper might raise red flags,” housing advocates showed up in droves to testify against it. They’re right: adding more fees does not help low income individuals. Instead it incentivizes them to enter a worse financial situation than before in order to obtain housing. There’s also potential for abuse by landlords.

For New Hampshire renters, finding an available apartment can be half the battle. Paying the upfront costs is the next hurdle.
