Meet our Member of the Month, Marc Lemoi, a dependable Water Commander and K9 Handler who has dedicated 30 years to Search & Rescue after getting his start with his father at just 10 years old. From rescuing hundreds of people during Hurricane Katrina to finding a lost child on his ATV as a teenager, Marc’s passion for bringing people home continues to inspire his teammates and his children 🛟

Name: Marc Lemoi

Years in SAR: 30

Years with the Team: 30

Team Role(s): Water Commander, K9 Handler

Occupation: Millwright

Why did you join Search & Rescue? I started coming around the team when I was 10 years old, with my dad. Hiding for all the dogs. Then I quickly grew into working a K9 myself and getting involved with the water rescue. I love to help people out.

Favorite training or deployment memory: I have been on so many deployments and trainings, but two deployments come to mind. When I was about 17 we were on a search for a autistic kid, me and my partner were out searching on ATVs. After a few hours we eventually located the kid and bought the kid back to command on my ATV the parents were so happy. It really made me feel good. The other deployment is when I was 19 we got called to Katrina so myself my dad and four other teammates headed to New Orleans. We were there for 10 days and rescued hundreds of people in distress on our boats.

What keeps you motivated? Bringing the Lost back home to the families. Also my kids are really interested in doing what I do, so I want to teach them everything that I know.

One word that describes you on a call-out: Dependable

Advice for new members: is to be your authentic self, be patient, observe, ask questions and take constructive criticism. Everyone is all on the team for the greater good and all around many years of service so be part of something

We are heartbroken to share the sudden passing of K9 Maverick.

Maverick was Dawn’s constant shadow, her partner in everything, and a dog who gave 100% to every single thing he did. From search deployments to community events, to the everyday moments at home, he showed up with enthusiasm, drive, and that unmistakable spark that made him *Maverick*.

For the past six years, he served alongside Dawn as a dedicated HRD K9, but his life was so much bigger than the work. He was a true partner in every sense — steady, joyful, and deeply connected to his person.

His passing from medical complications was sudden and devastating, and our hearts ache knowing there was no time for a proper goodbye.

To Dawn and Doug — we are so incredibly sorry. There are no words that make this kind of loss easier, especially when it comes without warning. Please know your entire NESAR family is holding you close and grieving alongside you.

Run free, Maverick. Thank you for your service and the joy you brought to so many. You will be deeply missed. 💔

We are heartbroken to share the passing of retired K9 Bentley. 🖤🐾

Bentley was an incredible search dog and gave so much to our team and the community over the years. Dual trained and certified in Air Scent and HRD, he worked countless missions and was part of a lifesaving find a few years ago that none of us will ever forget.⛑️

Even in retirement, dogs like Bentley never stop being part of the team. His work mattered, the lives he touched mattered, and the legacy he leaves behind will absolutely be remembered.

Sending all our love to his handler, Tracy, and his little sis, K9 Bougie, during this incredibly difficult time.

Rest easy, Bentley. Thank you for every mile, every search, and every moment of service. 🌈
