Volunteer Center of Door County Announces Organization Closure

Through the last many years, the Volunteer Center of Door County has been dedicated to its mission of connecting people to volunteer opportunities which develop their skills, create a greater sense of community, and meet local non-profit needs. With hundreds of not-for-profit organizations in the Door County community, the need for volunteerism is great. A hub where local volunteer opportunities and non-profit information is kept, the Volunteer Center has been a place where all could come to find a way to get involved and make a difference. Countless community members and visitors, from elementary students to active seniors, have relied on the Volunteer Center to help them choose opportunities that align with their interests and goals. This mission has changed lives.

The Volunteer Center has been best known for the few programs it ran to foster a sense of community and build dedication to service. One of these programs was the Sunrise Ambassador program where adult volunteers lead and encourage young children to get involved in and get excited about giving back to their community. On a larger scale, the Volunteer Center held an annual event, the Golden Heart Awards, to celebrate and spotlight some of our community’s most active volunteers. Through its 18 years of hosting this event, known as the “Feel Good Event of the Year”, the Volunteer Center has gifted over $55,000 in donations to community non-profits to aid in the furthering of their missions, and provided more than $11,000 in scholarships to college-bound Door County graduates who dedicated their high school years to serving our community. The impact of this event has been incredible.

It is with a heavy heart that the Volunteer Center has made the difficult decision to close its doors effective immediately*. When the center began years ago as a Leadership Door County Initiative, it was in a time where many non-profits did not have a web presence. There was no consolidated place where a community member interested in volunteering could find opportunities which aligned with their goals, and there was great need for an organization to provide that – so the Volunteer Center was born. As the years have passed, most local not-for-profits have developed websites of their own to promote their opportunities and large-scale volunteer search engines have taken over matching volunteer interests to local not-for-profit initiatives. This, coupled with ongoing financial stress and staffing difficulty, has led the Board of Directors to cease operations of the Volunteer Center effective immediately.

Though the Volunteer Center will no longer exist as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, the need to promote community engagement and recognize outstanding volunteers remains vital to our community. Our Board of Directors will continue to be advocates of promoting and stewarding volunteers in our community and invite you all to join us in that ongoing effort.

The Volunteer Center has appreciated the support of the Door County community through the years. We thank every donor, sponsor, and volunteer for the gifts of their time, talents and generosity. It has been a pleasure to be here and work toward making this community a better place for all.

Please direct any questions or concerns regarding the Volunteer Center status to the Board of Directors at (920) 746-7704.

*The Volunteer Center is currently working within DFI and IRS regulations to begin the dissolution process and determine disbursement of organization assets in accordance with 501(c)(3) law.

Twas the day before the Golden Heart Awards, and we have our last two extra special people to introduce you to - our nominees for the Karl May Lifetime of Service Awards. These indivudals have dedicated their lives to service, and we are so grateful.

Without further ado, we introduce you to our first nominee, Southern Door County School District's Patti Vickman!

Patti Vickman is one busy lady as the Superintendent of Southern Door School District. She serves on the board of directors or volunteers for many local non-profits - 19 is too many to name! Patti helped start the site-based Big Brother Big Sister Program that successfully operates in the Southern Door Schools. When Patti was told about this nomination, she said “I would only accept this nomination going forward with the understanding that I am just a representative of so many others who see their role as servant leaders.”

Patti, thank you for your extensive service to our community. Your work has touched so many lives!

Tonight we are happy to share with you our third and final nominated group for the 2020 Golden Heart Awards!

Let's hear it for the Sturgeon Bay Edge and Life Teen Core Members!

The Edge and Life Teen Core Team Members believe that it truly takes a village to raise our community’s youth. These volunteers give a minimum of 2 hours weekly to serve youth in faith formation programs. They lead small group discussions guided by the Catholic faith to help youth make good choices and feel that they have a place to truly be themselves. This group is an incredible support service for middle and high school students in our community. They can often be found at their program participants sporting events or musicals.

We appreciate what you do for our community!

We are officially TWO days away from the VIRTUAL Golden Heart Awards. Today we are excited to introduce you to our three nominees for Group Volunteers of the Year!

Let's bring out our first nominee, the DCMC Auxillary Door Way Gift Shop Volunteers!

The Door Way Gift Shop is 100% operated by volunteers. There are more than 30 volunteers, both men and women, who operate the gift shop at the Door County Medical Center. These volunteers support the health care needs of our community, as all proceeds benefit DCMC. In the last two years, they raised over $25,000 to partially fund the new Skilled Nursing and Hospice Care Center at DCMC. Collectively, they have donated more than 2,000 hours of their time in 2019.

Thank you, everyone!

Spring is a great time to get outside and get a little muddy! Tonight's Wisconsin Public Service Enviornmental Stewardship Nominee has created a program to do just that!

Put your hands together for the Sunrise Explorer Leaders from CrossRoads At Big Creek, Bobby Deggendorf and Steve Umentum!

The Sunrise Explorer Leaders Bobby and Steve wanted to give kids some time when teachers and other adults aren' the ones telling them what to do. They wanted their students to be immersed in their local environment, not just seeing nature on TV or reading about it from a text book. They began the Sunrise Explorers program, where every Wednesday 20-30 Explorers walk to Crossroads and participate in group and unstructured activities. These men have created a program which has sparked imagination and an unending love for the environment in our children.

In this time of quarantine, we hope you are all taking a bit more time to take a walk, go for a bike ride, and enjoy some time outdoors. (Safely, of course) Today we are happy to introduce the two nominees for the Wisconsin Public Service Environmental Stewardship Award.

Let's kick Monday off right! Please give a warm welcome to our first nominee, the Door County YMCA's Mark Holey!

Mark has taken an active role in the development, construction, and maintenance of the Prairie Gardens at the Door County YMCA Peterson Park. Mark works hard to make the Prairie Garden thrive, and it only gets better year after year. He installed a walking path and bird houses through the garden, monitors the usage and hatching cycles of wildlife in the park, and collaborates with other nonprofits to promote outdoor education in the gardens. He has created a beautiful space for our community to exercise in, spend time in, and simply enjoy.

Thank you, Mark, for your service!

Tonight we are happy to share with you the final youth nominee for the 2020 Golden Heart Award Scholarship. From Sturgeon Bay High, please welcome Katie Frank!

Katie Lynn Frank has focused her volunteer work on helping children with diverse needs be active and try new activities to break out of their shell. Through acting as a tutor for children with Autism and being an active volunteer in the Ride4Kids program, Katie has consistently felt rewarded by watching the children she works with grow socially and intellectually. She also serves lunches to seniors in our community through her school service club. Katie is currently in the process of planning a community mural project in Sturgeon Bay, so all in Door County can participate in creating public art.

Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated, Katie!

Sundays are great for looking around and recognizing all the good in your life. Southern Door County School District's Elizabeth Bretl believes in just that.

Knowing that someone’s day is brighter because she helped in some small way makes Elizabeth Rose Bretl’s heart happy. Through her work with Edge and the YMCA’s Girls Night Out program, she is able to be a positive influence on the lives of younger people. At the Holy Name of Mary’s Loaves and Fishes program, she enjoys serving warm meals to those who don’t often get a home-cooked dinner. Volunteering with the Giving Tree allows her to help those in our community who are less fortunate.

Thank you, Elizabeth!

Grab a cup of coffee and get ready to meet an incredible young woman from Sturgeon Bay High... Katherine Carter!

As a Junior Core Member for the Edge program, Katherine Carter shares her own struggles with middle school students and explains how her faith helped her during those times. She is also involved with the Sturgeon Bay High School Service Club, assisting with meals for senior citizens, the elementary school’s Earth Day Celebration, and other events. As part of Lifeteen, she has completed three mission trips, helping those in need throughout the United States.

To kick off the weekend we have a great nominee to introduce you to! Let's hear it for Delilah Rose, a senior at Southern Door County School District.

Being a tutor, mentor, and volunteer through Big Brothers/Big Sisters has given Delilah Rose a new sense of academic clarity. By helping her little develop confidence and grow into a passionate and courageous young girl, Delilah’s optimism has grown, allowing her to engage more deeply in any subject. In 2018, she founded the Southern Door Eagle Pride Newspaper, a student-run paper that focuses on multi-faceted modes of reporting.

Thank you, Delilah!

We are so grateful for all of the volunteers who make Door County such a wonderful community to live in. This morning's youth nominee is no exception.

Please put your hands together for Sturgeon Bay High's Georgia Feldman!

Since her freshman year of high school, Georgia Feldman had dedicated herself to environmental education. She initiated the milk carton recycling program at Sturgeon Bay Schools to lessen the amount of food and garbage waste and to teach students about the importance of recycling. As a result, she was the student representative for the High School Greenhouse Project, and attended Conserve School, a semester school for environmentally minded students. She also volunteers with Crossroads, the Land Trust, and several other local organizations.

Do you have room in your heart and home? Looking for families for two exchange students currently with welcome families. Meet Megan from New Zealand: Megan needs to follow a gluten free diet! Hi I'm Megan and I am excited to take part in the exchange program and learn more about your culture. My favorite subjects in school are physical education and geography and math. I am happiest when I am outdoors keeping busy. I'm an active person. I enjoy doing activities such as watching movies or listening to music and going to the gym with friends, or the trampoline park or snow boarding. I love hanging out at the beach and going to the mall with friends too. I hope I will be able to get involved in your local community by volunteering or just being a supporter at local events. I enjoy being around younger children and would love to be a big sister as I am the youngest in my family. I have lots of family pets, 4 dogs and two cats and some birds. I am really looking forward to establishing a strong bond with your family. Meet Lauri a boy from Finland! Hello! I enjoy computers, cross country, going to sporting events, ice hockey, and running. My favorite subjects in school are math, physics, social studies, and PE. I am not sure what I want to do as a career but am interested in Economics and Science. I love all sports and I like to play ice hockey, basketball, and soccer with my friends. I also love to watch the NHL, NBA, and NFL and would love to go to a game in person during my exchange! In my free time, I like to train for my hobby, Orienteering. I do this 4 to 7 times a week. I am so grateful to you for opening your home to exchange students like me! I hope to make lots of wonderful memories with you in the coming year!
Stella from Vietnam like spending time with my family, watching films, having picnics, and doing charity work! Can you open heart and home to Stella so she can do volunteer work with you? How would it feel to immerse yourself in another language and culture? A little scary, but exciting at the same time. That's what our international high school exchange students experience when they come here to study in the United States. They look forward to perfecting their English and learning our American culture. They bring their own spending money for personal monthly expenses and carry their own medical insurance. They hope for a host family (volunteer) to take them in and provide them with meals at home and a place to sleep. They give much in return by helping out with the household chores, babysitting the kids, bringing gifts from their country and teaching their language and culture to you. If you are interested in learning more, please PM me or comment here. Thank you for this opportunity to share.
