While talking with Sturgis citizens about what they want in their next mayor, one thing I keep hearing is that families still want some type of outdoor water facility, whether that is a splash park, outdoor pool, or something realistic that Sturgis families can actually use and enjoy.
In 1986, Tom Monahan (Tom's T's|Sturgis Tees) donated his “Official Logo” design to the Chamber to help raise money for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and community projects. It has long been said the vision behind those funds was to help create a splash park for Sturgis.
At one point, the City set aside $200,000 for a splash pad. Later, the idea expanded into the larger Aquatic/Adventure Park concept Sturgis Lakeside Adventure Park. Public records show the Aquatics Committee had raised approximately $410,000 toward that effort before the project was ultimately abandoned. Citizens deserve honest answers: Where did the money go? How much was spent? What remains? And what realistic options still exist today for a splash park or outdoor pool?
I also believe it is time to have an honest conversation about the Monahan family heritage logo. A growing number of citizens agree the logo should be returned to the Monahan family, where it would reach its full potential in the private sector. Government was never intended to compete with private business. The Monahan family understands the history, value, and marketing of the Heritage Logo better than anyone, and I believe it could continue generating sales tax revenue, community pride, tourism and promotion for Sturgis in their hands.
As we approach the 40th anniversary of Tom Monahan’s logo in 2026, I believe we have an opportunity to get BACK TO THE BASICS and focus on projects that directly benefit Sturgis families and preserve Sturgis community history.
If elected mayor, I will work to bring people together, demand transparency and accountability, explore realistic options for a splash park or outdoor pool, and open the conversation about returning the Sturgis Heritage Logo back to the Monahan family where it began.
