Riverhead’s Zoning Board of Appeals rejected Stony Brook University Hospital’s proposal to station its Mobile Stroke Unit at Staples Plaza after weeks of debate over emergency access, zoning and the future of stroke care on the East End.

The board said emergency vehicle dispatches were incompatible with the shopping center’s intended retail use.

The decision comes as Peconic Bay Medical Center expands its own advanced stroke treatment capabilities in Riverhead.
