The idea of the Easter Bunny is often traced back to German Lutheran communities as early as the Middle Ages. In parts of Germany, long before modern Easter traditions took shape, people observed seasonal changes with references to figures like Eostra, a symbol associated with spring and renewal. Rabbits, known for their rapid reproduction, became a natural representation of fertility and new beginnings—much like eggs, which also symbolize life.

Over time, these ideas evolved into the story of the Easter Hare—called “Osterhase” (or “Oschter Haws” in regional dialects). Similar to the role of Santa Claus, this hare was said to reward well-behaved children with treats, often in the form of eggs or sweets.

Interestingly, not every country follows the same tradition. In places like France, the Easter Bunny is not historically central. Instead, a different and imaginative story developed—one involving flying bells.
• In French tradition, church bells remain silent from Thursday through Saturday to honor the solemn period before Easter. According to folklore, these bells “fly” to Rome to be blessed and return on Easter Sunday, scattering chocolate eggs as they pass overhead. While modern celebrations in France may include the Easter Bunny for children, the bells are still considered the original gift-bringers.
• In the town of Bessières in southwestern France, Easter Monday is marked by a remarkable communal event: a massive omelette made with around 15,000 eggs. Families contribute eggs from their homes and gather in the town square where the dish is cooked in an enormous pan. This custom is said to date back to a visit by Napoleon Bonaparte, who once requested a large omelette to feed his army. The tradition continues today, symbolizing community and generosity during the Easter season. ゚viralシ
