We had a great time over at the 53rd Annual LFCA Conference last week! 🚒🔥

The conference offers us a chance to learn from fire service leaders across the state, strengthen relationships with fellow departments, and continue growing in our mission to better serve the Carlyss community.

PTSD and mental illness are undeniably real in the fire service, and they are not a sign of weakness. Firefighters witness and endure things that most people can't even begin to comprehend, and as leaders, we have a profound responsibility to acknowledge the weight of this toll and respond with unwavering support, not stigma.

True leadership shines brightest when we create a culture where every individual feels empowered to ask for help without fear, where mental health is treated with the same urgency and care as physical injuries, and where no firefighter ever feels alone or forced to suffer in silence.

As fire chief, I'm committed to leading with empathy, setting the standard, and making wellness an integral part of our daily culture. This means openly discussing trauma, supporting peer support groups and professional counseling, vigilantly watching for warning signs, and proactively checking in on our people long before a crisis arises.

Strong leaders don't turn a blind eye to the burdens our members carry; they build a department that values healing, fosters trust, and prioritizes accountability.

Firefighters bravely run toward danger; we must also fiercely protect the mind and spirit of those who dedicate their lives to this noble profession.

Rest easy Capt., may our days never be forgotten 🙏🏾
