The next secretary of defense should be a woman

In the nearly 75 years since the Department of Defense was created in 1947, Democratic and Republican presidents have appointed 27 people to the top job in the Pentagon, the secretary of defense. However, all the appointees have been males. Consequently there have been increasing calls for former Vice President Biden, who has been declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election to break the glass ceiling and to select the first female secretary of defense.

Four female lawmakers currently service in Congress would bring as much or more credentials than most of the 27 men who have been defense secretary, says the author of this commentary.

Here's Why the Military's Next Top Leader Is Likely a Woman

"We've had two women as secretary of state," Korb said, referring to Condoleeza Rice and Madeleine Albright. (Hillary Clinton also served as secretary of state, for a total of three.) It's time, Korb added, for a woman to lead the Pentagon, after 27 men have held the position.

There's a consensus in Washington, D.C. that Defense Secretary Mark Esper is on thin ice with President Donald Trump.

Can Space Force Be the First Military Branch Built for Women? - Air Force Magazine

The Space Force, created in December 2019 to manage military satellite and radar operations and rocket launches, is the sole branch of the armed forces in which women have held equal roles from the beginning.

“It’s not just a boys’ club anymore,” Remeta said. “We’re here at the beginning and we’ll always be here.”

The Space Force has a chance to make history as the only military branch built with women in mind from the start.

They Call USS Ford's All Female Bridge Watch Section the 'Iron 9'

Women have been serving on Navy ships for a quarter-century, although the deck department -- especially the bridge watch sections responsible for steering the ship and keeping a lookout for hazards -- have remained a mainly male preserve.

That changed with USS Gerald R. Ford’s underway last month -- all the deck department sailors assigned to the boatswain’s mates bridge watch teams were women. They call themselves the Iron 9.

What a bridge watch section does requires concentration and focus.

She Was the First Black Female U.S. Naval Academy Plebe

''The academy wasn't ready for [women],'' Mines said. ''It just happened quickly, and it needed to be done. The academy considered itself to be a combat school, and [women] were not allowed to serve in combat. So, we were seen as taking up spots for good combat officers that were needed, because we 'couldn't do the job.' Additionally, there was a general belief that as Black women ... I would not be able to lead in what was at that time a white-male Navy.''

When Janie L. Mines arrived at the Naval Academy the academy wasn't ready for women.

Senator Calls on Army Secretary to Give New West Point Cadets Access to Uniforms that Fit Women

"While on its face, the uniform policy may appear to be a gender-neutral policy, it does not appear to be so in effect. As the academy celebrates 40 years since its first female cadets graduated, it is past time to ensure that female cadets have equal access to uniforms that fit," Hassan wrote in a letter sent Monday to McCarthy. "The disproportional impact of this policy on female cadets may unintentionally send a message to female cadets that they are second-class citizens."

Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., has asked Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy to review a "gender-neutral" policy.

First monument honoring all military women to be unveiled at Arlington

The monument, titled The Pledge, will be unveiled during a ceremony Oct. 17. In bronze, it depicts a service woman outfitted for combat, kneeling and staring face-to-face with a military working dog. The base of the monument says it honors “all women of the U.S. military, past present and future.”

The Women in Military Service for America Memorial, at the gateway to Arlington National Cemetery, is regularly placed on lists of “hidden gems” within the nation’s capital — a perspective on the memorial that its leaders are trying to change.

Army Wants More Female Recruiters and Women Leading Combat Units

Army personnel officials today announced that the service surpassed its overall end strength goal for fiscal year 2020 with an active force of 450,383 soldiers. New female recruits make up 18.1% of the active force, a percentage that Army Recruiting Command Commander Maj. Gen. Kevin Vereen wants to increase.

Army Recruiting Command has seen a "huge benefit" from female recruiters and their ability to connect with female applicants.

For the first time ever, the female drill instructors could begin training men at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Commandant Gen. David Berger said Thursday. The move is part of a years-long congressional mandate the service is facing to make its entry-level training coed.

The Army is rolling out a new fitness test: Will it hold back women?

An Army initiative to create a stronger, fitter fighting force has yielded a dramatic gender gap, raising questions about whether the service might unintentionally compound barriers for women trying to move up the ranks.

Recent Army figures show that 54 percent of female soldiers failed the new Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), which is being rolled out on a provisional basis, compared with 7 percent of men during the second quarter of 2020.

To date, more than half of women have failed the test, which officials say is needed to ensure troops are ready for combat.

Sexual harassment should not be the price of admission for women in the military

One is reminded of the troubling remarks retired Air National Guard Lt. Col. Betsy Schoeller made on Facebook in response to the outcry over the Vanessa Guillen case: “You guys are kidding, right? Sexual harassment is the price of admission for women into the good ole boy club. If you’re gonna cry like a snowflake about it, you’re gonna pay the price.”

It’s an ugly rendering of our military, but I wish we could do a better job of proving her wrong.

Why do women in the military have to accept strange, demeaning, cruel, and even unlawful rites of passage to belong, asks the author of this commentary.

Hidden Biases and Artificial Barriers Didn’t Stop This Navy Officer

The future of the STEM workforce can’t be based on one gender or one group of people. “As I went through the Navy, I always wanted to be just known as an officer, not a female officer, not a male officer. I don’t want to be defined by my gender,” said the admiral.

She thinks it’s important to get out of the idea of the “first to.” “I don’t want it to be news that a woman is the first to… it should just be the way it is. You are just great because you are great at your job and not because you are a female,” Adm. Barrett added.

The VA Is Hoping To Build Awareness And Trust Among Female Veterans

To convince women that the VA is capable and equipped to meet their healthcare needs, the agency's Women's Health Transition Training Pilot began offering interactive seminars for female troops about to separate from the military. The sessions are led by female veterans who themselves get healthcare through the VA.

"(Women) do think that the VA is only for men," said Nancy Maher, who oversaw the creation, implementation, and delivery of the pilot. "They don't think that VA is a quality place to get care. And they're just very unaware of all the health care services that the VA has for women."

Women are the fastest growing subgroup among veterans. But many view the VA Health System as a place only for men.

Women’s Equality: A Conversation with the Deputy Army Surgeon General

“Women like retired Lt. Gen. West and many others, had a level of steel that I am not sure I have. If the people who go first don’t model well, then the others won’t be inspired to be a first. Be fearless, take the tough jobs and mentor others: Army leaders offer insights to fellow female soldiers

“My advice to a young female who had just joined the Army, whether in any component, is to consider where you want to be two positions beyond now,” Daniels said. “That may seem like it’s a far way off, but it’s really, really not. Just like my leaders did for me, ask your leadership for their thoughts.”

“As you think about these various possibilities and options, examine what education or training you might need to get there,” Daniels said. “Then go make it happen. Take the tough jobs, the stretch positions, then go do the hard work and make the most of every opportunity.”

“Who I am as a leader today — I would tell you it was a village that helped me to really be where I’m at.

Our Story

FUTURE GOALS American Women Veterans Foundation is always expanding its work within our focus areas. We are currently working to take AWV from a part-time endeavor, staffed with volunteers, to a full-time, fully-operational Veterans Service Organization with chapters across the United States and abroad. We are also continuously researching the needs of servicewomen, veterans and their families with the goal to register and launch programs directly assisting and benefitting our members. Beyond this, we will continue to share and celebrate the legacy of women in service and update/add programs as necessary. We will keep our members, supporters, and donors informed of expansion plans through our website, as appropriate.

Veterans whose stories are selected for development will receive a $1000 honorarium and hold on to the rights of their stories. Don't let the "musical" aspect dissuade you. NMI just needs a compelling story from your background – just one story – not a compilation -- and they will bring a composer, lyricist, and professional actor together to turn it into song. They will also welcome you into the collaboration process if you want to be included on the creative side. See the link for info and a very short video that explains the project. A little off-topic, but possibly of interest to someone... When I entered the Army in 1979 I was issued a mint green uniform. It was phased out soon after. I still have it and would like to know if there is some place that would want it - maybe for historical reference or similar purpose. Does anyone know of an organization that would want it? (I don't want to donate it and have it become some kid's Halloween costume!)
