AFSCME Local 66 held a picket this evening from 4 to 7pm at Boundary Ave & I 35. At issue is the possibility that Spirit Mountain could be privatized.

Currently Spirit Mountain is owned by the City of Duluth and administered by a Public Authority appointed by the City. The City is looking to lease it to a private company though, and in their current contract negotiations with the workers, they are refusing to agree to language that would require any future company to keep on the workers and their union.

The Northwoods Socialist Collective got together today to watch the Iran vs Belgium soccer game, while making anti-war zines. The zines will be distributed around town in the weeks ahead. And we'll be sure to have some on hand during our Red Ramble this coming Sunday (this will be a hike featuring a comrade teaching us Ojibwe words for local plants and animals). Delegates to the 39th UAW Constitutional Convention in Detroit, Michigan voted June 18th to divest from Israel bonds. The UAW reportedly holds at least $400,000 in these investments.

After UAWD members forced the amendment onto the Constitutional Convention agenda, UAW delegates voted to divest the union’s reported $400,000 in Israel bonds, marking a victory for decades of rank-and-file organizing.

Marcia Howard, the president of the teacher chapter of the Minneapolis Federation of Educators (MFE) Local 59, confirmed that trade unionists are among those detained. “I find it telling that they are going after unionists, including educators I know of right now, that they are going after workers. I’m really pi**ed off,” she said.
