City Council approved the City’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Final Budget last night.

The FY2027 final budget is $1.01 billion. The General Fund budget is $259 million, which is the City’s main operating fund.

Consistent with City Council’s top priority, the majority of this year’s General Fund budget increase is dedicated to public safety.

Budget highlights include:

✅13 new public safety positions out of 33 total new positions.
✅Continuation of General Obligation Bond funding for a new police substation and fire station in north Surprise and transportation projects across the city.
✅Funding for asset replacement, pavement preservation and vehicle replacement to maintain the City’s existing infrastructure and equipment.

Council also adopted the intent to levy the primary and secondary property tax at the same rates as last year. Adoption is set for June 16. Check out the images to see our rate history and how we compare to other West Valley cities.

Councilman Haney has been a champion for the residents of North Surprise since taking office. He inherited a substantial challenge of growth and traffic in his district and in a short period time has made significant improvements to 163rd Ave and secured state funding for further long-term improvements to the Grand Ave and Loop 303 area.

He excels at keeping residents informed via social media, newsletters, and in-person meetings. He’s a rare example of what can happen when good people get elected to public office, and I am proud to work alongside him on the City Council.

During National Police Week, the Surprise Police Honor Guard stood shoulder to shoulder with honor guard teams from across the nation. United in purpose, respect, and remembrance.

Together, they formed a line of quiet strength to welcome and honor the families of fallen officers. Every step, every salute, every moment was a reflection of a promise: that their loved ones will never be forgotten.

We are grateful for the partnership between agencies and the shared commitment to honoring those who gave their lives in the line of duty. Most importantly, we stand with the families of the fallen, today and always.

Over the past few weeks, our community has seen an increase in brush fires and waste fires due to the extreme heat and dry conditions. These fires can spread quickly and put homes, businesses, and lives at risk.

All residents please do your part in helping to prevent fires by following a few important safety tips:

- Do not burn trash or yard waste during high heat or windy conditions
-Properly dispose of ci******es and smoking materials
- Avoid parking vehicles on dry grass
- Keep yards and vacant lots clear of dry brush and debris
- Never leave outdoor flames or grills unattended
- Report smoke or suspicious fires immediately

Prevention starts with all of us. Even small actions can make a big difference in protecting our neighborhoods and keeping our community safe.

I also want to extend my sincere gratitude to our Surprise firefighters and emergency personnel who have worked tirelessly responding to these fires over the past several weeks. Their dedication, bravery, and long hours do not go unnoticed!

Stay safe, stay alert, and let’s work together to prevent future fires.

The Surprise Police Department celebrated a major milestone today with a groundbreaking ceremony for its very first substation!

The nearly 32,000-square-foot facility, coming to the northwest corner of 163rd Avenue and San Ysidro Road, is designed to accommodate approximately 60 sworn officers and civilian support personnel and will function as a fully equipped operational hub supporting patrol, investigations and community policing functions.

The facility’s location was strategically selected based on service area demand, projected growth patterns, and response time modeling – allowing for more efficient deployment of patrol units and optimized sector coverage. Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2027.

Thank you to Surprise voters for making this project possible through bond funding.

Together, we’re building on our strong foundation of safety and service in Surprise!
