A few simple precautions can help keep you and your family safe while enjoying the summer season outdoors. As families begin opening cabins, sheds, campers, and seasonal homes for the warmer months, Amador County Public Health reminds residents to use caution around deer mice and rodent droppings, especially in higher elevation areas of the county.
🐭 Deer mice can carry Hantavirus, a rare but serious illness spread through contact with infected rodents or their droppings, urine, and nesting materials.
🧼 Before cleaning enclosed spaces that may have been unused over winter:
• Air out the area for at least 30 minutes
• Avoid sweeping or vacuuming rodent droppings
• Wear gloves and use disinfectant or a bleach solution when cleaning
• Seal up openings where rodents may enter
ℹ️ Important reminder: The strain of hantavirus carried by deer mice in California is NOT the same strain recently associated with the cruise ship outbreak. The cruise ship virus can spread person-to-person, while the California deer mouse strain does not spread person-to-person.

🚦 May is National Youth Traffic Safety Month! 🚦
It’s the perfect time to remind our community that safe choices on the road can save lives—especially for our youth.
Help keep teens and children safe by remembering:
🪖 Always buckle up—no matter how short the trip
🚫 Never drink and drive—ride with a responsible adult
📵 Stay focused—put the phone away and avoid distractions
🚦 Obey traffic rules, signs, and signals
👫 Limit passengers—more teens in the car can increase risk
Together we can build healthy habits that last a lifetime! 💙

As cases of Measles continue to appear in neighboring counties, it’s important to stay informed and take steps to protect our community, especially our children.
Measles is highly contagious and can spread quickly, but it is also preventable. The best protection is the MMR vaccine, which is safe, effective, and part of the routine childhood immunization schedule.
👶 Now is a great time to:
✔️ Check your child’s vaccination records
✔️ Schedule any needed immunizations
✔️ Keep your child home if they are feeling sick
Protecting your child helps protect family members, friends, and our entire community.

🎮🚫 Not Just a Game: How Ni****ne Vapes Are Targeting Youth
Some ni****ne v**e products are starting to look and feel like games, with bright colors, fun designs, and even game-like features that can attract kids and teens. But behind the flashy look is ni****ne, a highly addictive substance that can harm developing brains.
🧠 Why this matters:
• Ni****ne can affect memory, attention, and learning
• Early use increases the risk of lifelong addiction
• Many products are designed to seem harmless or “fun”
Companies may market these devices in ways that appeal to younger audiences, making it easier for youth to get hooked without fully understanding the risks.
