Student Resource Time (SRT) at Swartz Creek High School gives students opportunities to learn, explore, and connect beyond their regular classes. And sometimes, that means making a difference in someone else’s day!

Yesterday, students in Mrs. Yancer’s SRT group got creative, making homemade Halloween cards for Cards for Kids, an organization collecting holiday cards for hospitalized children.

The students enjoyed putting their creativity to work for a great cause, and the kindness won’t stop with Halloween! They plan to continue making and donating cards for each holiday throughout the year.

A small gesture that could bring a BIG smile to a child who needs one!

Looking for volunteer hours, Dragons?

Whether you’re working toward National Honor Society service hours, building your college or job résumé, or simply looking for a way to give back, the Genesee District Library has an opportunity for you!

The GDL Teen Action Group (TAG) is looking for teens ages 14–17 to volunteer throughout the library system.

TAG members can:
• Earn community service hours
• Help with youth programs, activities and special events
• Assist with program setup and preparation
• Share ideas for teen programs and library materials
• Meet new people and make a difference in their community
• Gain experience that can be included on job and college applications

No previous experience is needed!

TAG opportunities are offered throughout the year, with fall, winter, spring and summer seasons.

Please note: Beginning October 2, teens will also need to register with Michigan’s Youth Employment Program (YEPP) to obtain a work permit.

📢 Important Update for Families: Changes to Michigan Work Permits

Beginning October 2, 2026, the process for obtaining work permits for minors in Michigan is changing.

Currently, schools issue and revoke work permits. Under Public Act 196 of 2024, that responsibility will move to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO).

What families need to know:

• New online system: Minors and employers will use LEO’s free online registration system to apply for and process work permits.

• Ages 14–15: Work is permitted between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. from June 1 through Labor Day and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. the rest of the year.

• During the school year: Work is limited to 3 hours per day and 18 hours per week.

• When school is not in session: Minors may work up to 40 hours per week.

As the October 2 transition approaches, additional information about the new system will be available through Michigan LEO.
