Several citizens have noticed flooding on local streets due to the heavy rainfall. This is just a friendly reminder to homeowners to please keep your road ditches clear and free of debris -- leaves, limbs, trash, etc. It makes it easier for everyone if we all do our part. The public works department is working to clear the areas most clogged at this time. Another reminder is that you may wish to contact the school to see if any group -- FFA, FBLA, etc. would be willing to come clear your ditches -- for a small donation -- when the weather dries up.

The public is invited to attend a town hall meeting on Wednesday, March 28 at 6:30 pm about the pool bond issue. We will be taking public input as well as showing possible designs based on the amount of the bond issue. Flyers about the pool improvements are available at City Hall.

Today I also worked on an insurance issue, and I corresponded with MML (Missouri Municipal League) and our city attorney. Just in case people think we "aren't doing anything."

I wrote 4 additional nuisance letters today.

What has been going on at the Mayor’s office? I hear that quite often.
Well, we have been quite busy. First, as Mayor, I serve on several county and area boards including the Rural Housing Task Force with Representative Emmanuel Cleaver, Homeland Security with Pioneer Trails, and the Saline County Emergency Planning Commission. Some of these meet monthly, every other month or quarterly.
The Lagoon Project has been going on for a number of years. The Department of Natural Resources have change regulations a number of times over the years, and we have had to alter our plan to be in compliance. We then learned that the equipment and installation we had chosen was inappropriate for our needs and at the suggestion of the engineer, upgraded to a program that would better suit our needs. This change increased our costs as well. We have been seeking and finally found and applied for a grant to assist us financially. We have received word that this grant has been approved. We are now finally close to starting the bid process. After that process, the project will begin.
I know several people are upset that our pool has been closed. It was closed with the safety of our citizens in mind. We are working to pass a bond that will give us needed pool improvements and required upgrades to the chemical and filtration systems.
The last thing I hear many questions about are nuisances. I know there are many properties that are not what we would hope our neighbors would do. In just the last couple of years, I have sent out over 150 grass nuisance letters, over 150 vehicle violation letters, and 34 letters for trash and debris. There is a process to this. I write the first letter and give those in violation a certain amount of time (2 -4 weeks depending on the violation) to be in compliance. After that time, if they are still in violation, they receive a second notice. After the required amount of time, if not in compliance, they are issued a summons to appear in court. At that time, our municipal judge works with the offender to come into compliance. If they are still in violation, they can be fined.
And just in case someone is worried about the amount of postage, many of these letters are delivered by the police department, in accordance with our ordinances.
