WildWARBLERlife Wednesday - Since numerous warblers have been migrating through the Midwest for the past month, thought it would be appropriate to feature a few more of these cool little birds. This week, we have Nashville, Tennessee, and Palm Warblers. A special shout out to my mom for sharing her trees (and Tennessee Warblers!) while I took pictures and procrastinated with the yard work.

WildWARBLERlife Wednesday - Since various warblers have been migrating through our area, thought it would be appropriate to feature some of these cool little birds over the next several weeks. Many warblers have yellow feathers, but only one of these is actually known as a Yellow Warbler. The others this week include the Prothonotary Warbler and the Wilson's Warbler.

Wildlife Wednesday "Mother's Day Edition - Part II" I noticed these Muscovy ducks (and ducklings) the last time we visited Florida. As you can see in the last picture, the babies have grown a bit since then. Hope you had a nice Mother's Day, Mrs. Muscovy...

Wildlife Wednesday? "Mother's Day Edition - Part I" (Sorry for the tardy post, but the entire RWP staff is traveling this week, and lost track of the days...) Anyway, these pictures represent the last 3-4 months at a number of Great Horned Owl nests in DeKalb and Kane Co. These pictures make me smile at being able to watch each of these owlets grow, move out of the nest, and begin to fly. We hope all of these owls live a long and prosperous life! And more importantly, Happy Mother's Day to all of you special moms out there!

Wildlife Wednesday - If you spot a marsh at a local forest preserve, you might want to check amongst the cattails, sedge and grasses for some unique wildlife. (And these animals are really good at hiding behind, and/or blending into their surroundings!) This week, we feature two new friends - Bernie, an American Bittern; and Victor, a Virginia Rail.

Wildlife Wednesday - As the migration continues this spring, it has been nice hearing and seeing some colorful additions to our local, wild world. Say hi to George, a Golden-crowned Kinglet, and Eddy, an Eastern Meadowlark. Hopefully, you all can enjoy these feathered friends in person soon...

Wildlife Wednesday - Thanks to a tip from a friend, I was able to watch a family of foxes for a few hours this past week. First, mama crossed the field and arrived to the den area (underneath a shed in the back yard). Next, she dropped off some food and nursed them. So neat watching the five kits jump and play - they sure are funny to watch.

Wildlife Wednesday - Sometimes life is good, but at times a bit wild, and also brutally unfair. Unfortunately, one of my friends (who has taught me so much about identifying birds) lost his dear wife this past week. When such events happen, it is hard to find the right words to say - as everything seems to sound cliche. But I know Barb is in a better place now and not in pain anymore. A place that is only good, fair, and filled with colorful, singing birds. And I suspect she enjoyed seeing birds as much as my friend and I do. So, I dedicate this week's post to both of them. Rest in peace, Barb.

Wildlife Wednesday - Was fortunate to find two different barred owls recently - one here in DeKalb County, and the other while on vacation last week. Can you guess which one lives in Florida?!
