The Nassau County Soil & Water Conservation District (the District) is issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the procurement and installation of a Motus Station on an existing tower, including all associated equipment and components necessary for a complete and operational system, in partnership with the Town of Hempstead, New York. The RFP can be found at our website here:https://nassauswcd.org/gallery/NCSWCD%20Motus%20Tower%20RFP%20FINAL%2010.09.26.pdf

A Motus Station is an automated radio telemetry receiver station used to detect and track the movements of small, migratory wildlife. The station will become part of the Motus Wildlife Tracking System, a global collaborative research network launched by Birds Canada in 2014. The system enables researchers and conservation practitioners to collect movement data from animals equipped with small radio transmitters, providing valuable information on migration patterns, habitat use, stopover locations, and other aspects of wildlife ecology.

Please review the RFP carefully, including the project specifications, requirements, submission instructions, and evaluation criteria. All questions must be submitted in accordance with the RFP and by the stated deadline. Proposals must likewise be prepared and submitted in accordance with the RFP requirements and received by the stated proposal deadline.

Thank you for your interest in this project. We look forward to receiving your proposal.

Did you know that there are 7 types of hawks present on Long Island, and 8 in New York State? Use your species ID skills and let us know which hawk you think this is!🦅

Based on the black-dashed and yellow-tipped feathers of its prey, we suspect the hawk caught a Northern Flicker.

Happy SepticSmart Week! September 14-18
🚽💡🫧
Innovative / alternative onsite wastewater systems are a great way for homeowners to reduce their waste’s impact on the environment and the waterbodies that we cherish as Long Islanders.

The Nassau County Soil & Water Conservation District recently participated in an Agricultural Environmental Management (AEM) meeting in Putnam County. As part of the meeting, we had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on training at Ridge Ranch Farm, where we explored the various tiers of the AEM program and gained valuable insight into its application in agricultural conservation and environmental management.

To participate, farmers connect with their local Soil and Water Conservation District to progress through the confidential, AEM Conservation Tiers, below:

Tier 1 – Inventory current activities, interests, and potential environmental concerns of the farmer.

Tier 2 – Document current environmental stewardship and assess and prioritize areas of concern.

Tier 3 – Develop conservation plans addressing concerns and opportunities tailored to farm goals.

Tier 4 – Implement plans using available educational, technical, and financial assistance.

Tier 5 – Evaluate practices and plans for conservation and farm viability.

This week, the Nassau County Soil & Water Conservation District partnered with LI Invasive Species Mgmt Area in Valley Stream to pull the aquatic invasive species Ludwigia peploide, commonly known as water-primose or floating primose-willow. This was a follow-up visit from our pull in October 2025 (swipe to the last photo to see last year's effort!), ultimately managing and reducing two populations of the plant and filling an additional 12 garbage bags.

This species is not to be confused with the native Ludwigia species which was also present in this stream. To properly identify the invasive Ludwigia, it is characterized by spoon-shaped, alternative leaves with yellow flowers.

Ludwigia peploides spreads rapidly and has severe consequences for the health of aquatic ecosystems and all the plants and animals that live there. This plant grows in dense mats, ultimately outcompeting native flora, reducing water quality, and interrupting stream flows. It also has a negative effect on aquatic recreation in many areas.
