The Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the largest law firm in the county, employs more than 200 people, and approximately half of them are deputy prosecutors. Pierce County, which includes Tacoma, has a growing population of 813,600. The Criminal Division represents the state and the county in criminal matters in the Pierce County District and Superior Courts, the state and federal cour

ts of appeal, and the Washington and U.S. The Criminal Division is responsible for prosecuting all felonies in Pierce County and all misdemeanors in unincorporated areas of Pierce County. The criminal division is respected state-wide for vigorous prosecution. The Civil Division is the county's law firm. It serves as legal counsel to the Pierce County Council, the County Executive, the Superior and District Courts, executive department heads and numerous County agencies and departments. The division litigates cases on behalf and in defense of its clients, provides day-to-day legal advice and assistance on all sorts of questions and projects, and issues formal written legal opinions from time to time. The Family Support Division is an integral part of the federal and state child support system. The deputies establish paternity for children born out of wedlock, ensure support obligations are enforced, and modify support amounts when necessary. All three divisions pride themselves on professionalism and public service.

Today a measure of justice was achieved for Angelina Palmer, a mother and innocent bystander struck and killed by gunfire walking out of a gas station in 2022. Jerrmell Warren was sentenced today to 63 years, 7 months after a jury convicted him of Murder 1, Assault 1, and other charges. Thank you to DPAs Ben Nelson and Ray Odell for their work on this case.

Today Angel Mendez was sentenced to 598 months in prison (49 years, 10 months) in the case involving the October 3, 2023 murder of Seok “Charlie” Park, owner of The Little Store on S. Ainsworth. A jury found Mendez guilty last month of Murder 1, Robbery 1, and Assault 2 for his two-day crime spree that included the murder of Mr. Park.

After a three-week trial, a jury today found Maleke Pate guilty of four counts of Aggravated Murder in the First Degree, the penalty for which is life without the possibility of release. Oct. 21, 2021 will long be remembered as one of the worst days in our community’s history. The jury today found Pate responsible for senselessly taking the lives of Maria Nunez-Iese, Emery Iese, Natasha Brincefield, and Raymond Williams. Thank you to deputy prosecutors Sunni Ko and Lindsay Chenelia for their outstanding work, and to the Tacoma Police Dept. detectives who doggedly pursued every lead.

Today defendant Terry Kohl was sentenced to 484 months in prison for his criminal conduct that resulted in the death of 12-year-old Immaculee Goldade on Jan. 15, 2022. Kohl also significantly injured Immaculee’s best friend when he struck them both in a stolen truck.

After a 10-day trial in July, a jury found the defendant guilty of Vehicular Homicide, Vehicular Assault, and Failure to Remain as well as burglary, stolen vehicle, stolen property, and gun possession charges. The jury also returned special verdicts for “particularly vulnerable” victim aggravators. Immaculee’s family spoke at sentencing today about the need for accountability, but also of their forgiveness. Thank you to deputy prosecutors Liz Dasse and Tom Howe for their great work in this trial and to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department for their top-notch investigation.

On Wednesday, the Puget Sound Auto Theft Task Force recovered 11 stolen vehicles in a Parkland emphasis patrol and made three arrests. Two were Pierce County cases. One was charged yesterday with two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and one count of Obstructing a Law Enforcement Officer. The other defendant was charged with Unlawful Possession of Stolen Vehicle, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm 1, and two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance With Intent to Deliver. In the patrol, officers recovered three Hyundais, three Kias, three Fords, a Subaru, and a Jeep. Thank you, officers with the Auto Theft Task Force - Puget Sound for your great work!

A jury has found Robbrie Thompson guilty of two aggravated murders. The community was shocked by the April 2019 killing (witnessed by her husband) of beloved store owner Soon Ja Nam, 79, at the Handy Corner Market in Puyallup. Two days later, Thompson’s friend’s body was found in the water near Chinook Marina with a gunshot wound. Yesterday the jury handed down a measure of justice for these two senseless murders. Deputy prosecutors Kawyne Lund and Brian Wasankari did an outstanding job proving their case in a trial that lasted more than five weeks. Thank you to the jurors who worked through a long trial and to the case detectives for their incredibly detailed investigation.
